As a kid I studied a bit of USA history (out of school) as much more interesting than ours.
Daniels knows basically zip of it.
Plan to get into the history as we do the trail.
I gather nearly all Civil War, sorry - read Yankee War of Aggression if your locale is south of Mason Dixon line, orientated in the south and war of Independence in the north.

We may have more interesting history, but y'all definitely have better tour guides. :)

This is what I posted to OZ. My suggestions for his drive to GA. He plans to go down I-81 to be close to trail. I sent him this last night. add on things you canthink of that will help him.

Things to see on drive down

Hershey, PA: http://www.hersheypa.com/
Shenandoah Caverns: http://www.shenandoahcaverns.com/
Luray Cavern: http://www.luraycaverns.com/
Natural Bridge: http://www.naturalbridgeva.com/
Gettysburg: http://gettysburg.com/
Monticello: http://www.monticello.org/ The estate of the writer of our Declaration on Independence & our third president.

Retailers:
Campmor: http://www.campmor.com/
Gander Mountain: http://www.gandermountain.com/ Winchester, VA

Departing NYC I would consider stopping at Campmor for many last minute camping items that you need to purchase. It’s in NJ but not to far of a detour. They our one on the best discount camping stores I have dealt with. Big enough to get good discounts & market their own discount brand, but small enough that customer service is great. Just their standard shipping is so fast in many cases nor worth paying extra unless dire emergency. I would get familiar with their website & worthwhile website to know on the trail. When boss left it up to me to buy cheap durable rainwear for work bought their coated nylon stuff. Not my preferred choice for backpacking but proved durability of their brand. They also carry many top brands at discount. I’ve heard several good stories about phone dealings with them, myself included & never a bad comment. It is a little off track but not to far.

About shortest way to I-81 is I-78. It joins up with 81 on outskirts of Harrisburg. Try not to it around rush hour 4-7 pm. Hershey, PA is a small detour if you want to visit the chocolate plant. I would continue on & if it’s late Carlisle, PA offers several economic options. Exit 52 of I-81 will bring you to truck stop, Flying J/hotel area mentioned in guidebooks. Trail crosses road just beyond. Or you could head into Duncannon.
This is where you should decide if you want to visit Gettysburg Battlefield. Pretty much the battle that decided our Civil War (isn’t that a contradiction of terms). If you want to continue on you have many option of chain hotels & cheaper mom & pops.

Going south there is a Gander Mountain outdoor shop next to Hwy in Martinsburg, WV. More orientated towards hunter & fishers but some backpacking gear.

As you get into Virginia the Shenandoah’s are off to the east. You will be hiking along the crest. If you have time you could drive the Skyline trail but speed limit is 35 & you will be hiking it soon enough. I would recommend Luray caverns if you want to streach your legs & visit a cave. Around Harrisonburg is another Gander Mountain Outfitter.

When you get down to I-66 you could detour up to Blue Ridge Parkway, but once a gain a slow road you will be hiking close to. Some Suggested detour Montebello & Natural Bridge if needing diversion. AT crosses I-81 just north of Roanoke in Daleville. Several cheap hotels by TA Truck stop, I’d check with Hikermom for better info on this area. It’s her home turf.

From here to exit 54 AT is to your west where it crosses Hwy again. Might be a good place to stop & get a feel for resupply. Continue down 81 until it ends & turns into I-40 West to Knoxville & then pick up I-75 to Atlanta. Knoxville is a pain at rush hour & avoid it at all costs in Atlanta if you can.

Campmor might have aquamira, maybe but doubt it at Gander Mountains. Best bet would be ask HikerMom for an outfitter in her area or REI in Atlanta, or ask Hiker Hostel.

I have driven these interstates numerous times & many of the side routes.& can get you a construction update when it get closer. If you have any questions please fee free to ask.

It always seems strange to an outsider that all of the history of "that" war seems to be perpetuated by what we all learnt were the losers...
Still as someone in a country where our most significant military memories and "events" are on the anniversary of one of our worst defeats I shouldn't be surprised.
(25th April, 1915. Gallipolli)

Really did not mean that much to the North. Most people in North were just fine with the South's constitutional right to secede, and would have been fine with letting them go. Reason for the war was Lincoln's headstrong goal to "preserve the Union" and change the government to much more centralized and weaken states rights.. Meant a whole lot more to the South who were fighting for their independence, and then suffered through "total war - scorched earth policy" and afterwards suffered through reconstruction. North naturally easily moved on, but not so easy for the South, even 150 years later.

Been doing a lot of research about Lincoln for a paper/presentation I am putting together, but unfortunately think a lot less of him than when I started. He still had his strengths such as leading people and managing the war, and I guess that is what I need to focus on.

I have a copy of a letter written by my mothers great-grandfather from Jarvis Sanitary Hospital in Baltimore at the end of the war. He suffered a gunshot wound to his leg and almost lost it. It was clear from that letter why he was in the war. He spent one paragraph on his leg and half the letter in the plight of the "colored man". My great-great-grandfather was willing to risk his life for a people that looked different than him. That was why he fought and why a lot of people fought who were in the G.A.R.

It is not that simple. Yes, Lincoln's 1st goal was to preserve the union. However, the north would have lost the war if freeing the slaves did not become the rally cry of the north. Watch Ken Burns Civil War series. Lee was a far better general than anything the north had. Europe was close to siding with the south because they wanted the products of the south. Once emancipation was introduced, it was over for the south (that and Macmillan losing to Lincoln). If Europe had sided with the south (and they were close to doing just that), they would have been seen as supporting slavery. The south was out-manned and supported slavery and those 2 things spelled their defeat.

I am very interested in the civil war, because I had 4 great great grandfathers who fought in it: Augustus H Morse, Joseph Chambers, Asa Terris McRae, and Stephen Hadley.

Yes, Lincoln's 1st goal was to preserve the union, and the south was all about state's rights. However, the south was all about owning another person and that is why they seceded and fought and lost.

Once many years ago Steve Winwood (at one time also known as little Stevie Winwood) had his agent rent a boat to go deep sea fishing. The captain of the boat upon reaching agreement with the agent, said he just had one question, how was he going to be able to see how to fish. Of course he had mixed him him up with Stevie Wonder.

Mike Webb (https://www.facebook.com/mike.webb.99)
Here is Robert Runner, the individual that caused Glass Sunrise and myself so much grief during our 2012 thru hike last year. He collected 2 felonies and 2 misdemeanors in Swain and Graham county North Carolina. He ran around naked for over 4 hours making death threats with his knives and guns at the "Fontana Hilton" shelter at Fontana Dam.

He was arrested on the same day the TVA police were disbanded or greatly reduced and coverage given to local counties in terms of protecting the laws around Fontana Dam.

We thought he was finished, but he was released at 4 AM in Bryson City, North Carolina by a judge. He Hitchhiked to get back to the trail.( even though he was banned from former TVA land, and to get into the smokies in the trail you need to cross Fontana Dam. No one saw him cross it so they could not charge him for it )

They decided to give him back all of his stuff ( knives included - cops found he had no guns on him ) and he found Glass Sunrise and myself hiking into the smokies and made death threats again and promised we would not show up for court because his parents are rich. ( for the drunken disorderly he just got out on )

He said he was going to kill us, but first he wanted to kill Dragonfly ( another thru hiker, a woman ) because he did not like her and "refused" him. ( he woke up on top of her two days before )

We called this time the same sheriff that arrested him and let him go ( just a kid who got drunk and was having fun as he said ) AND as he was in the Great Smokey Mountain National Park - the rangers.

We figured he made a huge mistake as now the charges would be federal. If you can remember last year some unfortunate incidents happened in the smokies (such as suicides) so after the rangers laid a trap for him at Clingman's Dome and arrested again, the federal prosecutor REFUSED to charge him!

We found out later from Detective Hofecker from Swain County that the reason why was simply that the park did not need more bad press that year! Swain County and Graham County decided to charge him with two felonies and two misdemeanors.

The court case came up in December but Glass Sunrise and myself did not have the funds to make the trip and the DA refused to pay to get us there to testify - so the judge let him go on "prayer for justice".

He is now 18, walking around free after last years insanity, ruined several persons potential thru hikes, cost untold amount over overtime to capture him, and caused fear.

No justice served, and the biggest fear we have his he will be on the trail again this year. We have no idea if he continued on, but we saw him at trail days for the last time AGAIN after being released and allowed back on the trail by authorities and the ATC. He made a "throat cut" gesture to us from a car he was hitching back to the fields as we were heading into town on foot.

His trail name at Fontana Dam was "Lazy Susan" but we found out that he changed his trail name often. We were amazed at how much the ATC knew about this guy and the "chatter" they had on their private internal website. ( where ATC officials and the head of the rangers and rangers can talk about trail in private with a web login )

We found this our at trail days from Laurie who took our official paper report on Robert Runner.
I am posting this as a service to fellow thru hikers in 2013. And to get some kind of relief and justice. The actual justice system let us down. Glass Sunrise ( my fellow hiker who I hiked with ) and myself WILL be going back to COMPLETE our thru hike in 2014.

I want to say that 99% of the people we met on the trail were nice people. The trail community is wonderful and is is fantastic experience. I urge everyone to continue on your trip and to not let this scare you! That is not my intent; it is simply info to protect yourself.

Sadly, we are considering bringing legally owned and licensed firearm protection in 2014. We were in that tiny tiny % that "met the crazy" of the trail. Even the sheriff and cops we dealt with said to us that we could have "solved" this as its "your word vs. his" in the "backwoods" - with lots of nodding and winking at us. It was clear they blamed us for not protecting ourselves so next time we will.

Here is the photo of Robert Runner I located at a hostels website from last year he took weeks before we ran into him.
If you meet this guy, contact the ATC and inform them that he is back on the trail. Dont t risk it - he would sit for hours and just stare with his cold dead eyes at you and then he gets fixated on you.

I am not trying to scare people - just educate fellow hikers. Please also remember these events took place in 2012. I also want to say the trail is safe, fun, and 99.95% of the people we met were awesome!

I catch on to some of the jokes and miss others. Someone sent me a PM when I got the 18,000 post by posting a video of a 18,000 lb bomb being dropped. The PM suggested I should ask for a cafe stool. I did a search and found that I did not want that kind of stool. So not cummerbund, eh? Is Water Rat even heading it up? She must be really confused by my PM. Probably thinking I am more an idiot than I claim to be. Hmmm... maybe I am on to something.

Fished and camped all over Montana, many summers with buddies from NC I grew up with. Favorite non float fishing spot is Rock Creek outside of Helena. Great campsites, free, streamside. Lots of bear and wild sheep in the area. Bigger fish out there for sure. Madison River outside the park is great too. One of my Buddies now has a cabin there, just outside Ennis. He would let us use it. We should go.

Found a new Brookie stream last week in SNP. 2.5 mile hike in, only accessible from Skyline Drive. Then 1 mile bushwhack to park boundary and fish back upstream. No pressure. Lots of nice size native fish for around here. Only got to fish for about an hour but had some luck below the surface.
There were flies coming off but saw none being taken.

You have a place to stay any time you want to visit Black Hills & Badlands area. Passed thru Sturgis many times en route to Montana. Crossed the Crow Reservation one year in a sea of bikers headed west from Sturgis. The big dodge van I had was doing 90 or better on that curvy road, just to go with the flow. Must have been 40 bikes in front of me and as many behind. It was surreal. Unforgetable.

Very nice. I like that spin. I have yellow tacks all over my Google Earth, but your version is more tangible.

Lucky... I haven't spent much time in the western states at all... I want to tho. :)

If you ever do, please PM me. I know where the real "big trees" are. The tour books and internet sites send you to the wrong spots. There are so many things in life that are must sees. I will not see them all, but have checked off a few. The whole AT is on my list.

You have a place to stay any time you want to visit Black Hills & Badlands area.

That one is on my list. Next train trip. It is a rent-a-car jaunt from the station, but it too is on the list.

:)

I with ya on this. I love going places I've never been, especially trails. They're the best.

Number 1 visit is Yellowstone, then Glacier! I have been to Jelly 7 times, fishing trips of course, so much to see. But, I have backpacked in 5 wildernesses. My friend out there has bad knees now, and my fishing partner from here has a bad back.............they are both younger/older than me. I've been very lucky to find HB57. I just wish he'd finish Maine so I can talk him into going out to the big sky!:sun

Tough to rank them, but I would say that I liked Monument Valley the best. I have incredible sunrise pictures from the night we spent there. I will upload one.

But everyone says Maine & the Whites are double rainbow triple squee special

I have explored most of Maine and the best part is something few see. We sail the coast a couple of weeks every year (thanks to my sister). Looking back at Maine through the fingered islands jutting into the ocean with the rolling hills as the backdrop is breathless.

When HB and I were up there in August that is all I had.....I had to get my fill..........you can't get them like that here:(

I miss lobster, used to give for the weekend mornings. After I got certified dive master let me dive for free since I was such a strong swimmer...but he always paired me with his problem students. After my dive partner would drop off the boat he would tell me their problem I'd smile & say "Thank Phil". Pull my mask on & drop off. Couldn't beat lobster lunch with a good nitrogen high though!

I will be honest: I don't eat that many any more. I prefer a good rib-eye. I grew up digging clams and trapping. I can pick a lobster clean in under 2 minutes. Here is a trick for you: Use a rolling pin on its walking legs. The meat rolls right out.

Yup. Wish they could finish it. I have heard they were offered help from the government, but turned it down. I respect that stance, but hope they can get the job done. It would be an incredible sight.

Best "lobster" ever. Barehanded off Walker's cay snorkeling from 25 ft boat out of Palm Beach for a week. Had scuba gear, just didn't need it. 20 minutes from the bottom of the deep blue sea to the bottom of our 3 stomachs. Steamed on a coleman stove and washed down with Mount Gay rum and pineapple juice. Unforgettable.

I pass on almost every feed. I get my rib-eye, while the rest chow down on lobstah, clams, and corn on the cob.

Both are a rareity for me now...darn gout. But dry aged meat out here is to die for! There is a place outside of Cheyenne, WY I would go to every year. Cut the meat with your fork. Their drunken rib-eye was to die for!

A woman that used to work at the Lake Worth pool where I used to swim told me that back in the 30's they used to kick the lobsters up on shore with their feet in the Intracoastal Waterway every night. Said she grew tired of lobster.

When I lived over seafood store & roomate managed it I did. Had to cull the tanks for dead ones & cook them every day before they contaminated the tank. We'd steam them & shuck the meat from them. After a while you got sic of the few bites you would sneak night after night.
