my experience has been great, outside of getting hurt. everyone has been helpful. as always, a nice trip restores my faith in the kindness of strangers. ive received emails from several sobos i hiked with that heard i got off trail wishing me well, and ran into a few of the guys yesterday who dorve up from monson, hope i can hike on with them. my ankles feeling much better today, still a bit of pain, but its down to a dull ache and i should be back on trail tomorrow with coach lou. im now a bit undecided on whether ill continue through the bigelows, as the foots healing better than i thought, but i still have to take it a day at a time, wait and see.
ive been going stir crazy at the motel, trying to rest the leg as much as possible. although the motel has wifi, my phone doesnt work up hereso i have to walk a half mile into town to get online.
but no, even with the injury, its been a wondeful trip so far.
and im not done yet.ive logged 122 more miles, which should be good for at least 1200 more posts to keep my post/miles hiked ratio in line with proper parametersas outlined in the official cyber hiking companion. im sure kayak karl will be thrilled to hear this.

my attitude is always the same-its all good.
all of it, the good the bad and the ugly. the smokers, the sinners, the snorers, the whiners, complainers, the guys who never say die, the ones who never give up, as well as the ones who do.the sunnydays the bugs, the day the bugs left, the dunking in the pleasant river, the hiking 7 hours in a torrential downpour to get to shelter and rest my leg. the SOBO who hiked down .4 miles and back just to replenish my water supply and save me the trip.
its all good.
all of it.

Did he run it through a cyberhiker approved SILWF?

hikerboy57
08-15-2012, 10:32
i try to assume the same attitude off trail as well. just like a LD hike, life has its ups and downs, and downhill is always tougher than uphill. its the downs in my life that ive learned the most from and i believe have made me a more tolerant compassionate person(although thats always a work in progress). ive learned more from people i disagree with than people that i agree with, forces me to consider a different point of view. ive learned that anyones opinion is just as valid as my own.
ive also learned the many benefits of the SAWYER IN LINE WATER FILTER!

met a guy named shelter stu with guitar and dog will be out on the trail a full year come end of august. he let me play his guitar, and i developed some infamy on the trail for my ax playing.first couple i spent some time with were fidget and dot.com, retirees from TX, started up from damascus, decided to flip like a lot of sobos i met to get out of the heat. firs week of august was hot and buggy here too, though. fidget and dot.com carried a SILWF, and ive got the picture to prove it. i explained the meaning of the five bullets, and had a good time hanging with them for a few days. overnighteed at white horse landing, thanks 10-k, you were right about the 1 lb burger-awesome.

Fidgit and dot.com have a good trail journal. I definitely want to do the 1 lb WHL burger. Makes me hungry to think about it. ...

If we're veering off into entomology, I also have a Very Important Question. What the heck are those bugs that look like large flying ants but sting the ***** out of you? I had problem with them for about 3 weeks last summer. They were maybe 1/2" long, or a little less, and really looked like large, slender ants, but boy, did they pack a painful sting. They were very aggressive too. Their stings are as painful as yellow jacket stings and leave a painful welt that lasts at least 2 or 3 days.

I know that is a common thing. I just hadn't really realized just how bad it was until I stepped away.

Guess I'll wander over to the pool, pull the dogs out of the water (then give them baths...that pool is looking gross), and throw a penguin to the polar bear.

Well you can't say you've had a full day until you've had some mashed potatoes, swam in the pool (the other end to the polar bear), shared some of Water Rat's cookies with the Hooters girls and washed it all down with water filtered through a Sawyer InLine Water Filter while throwing bullets at the unsupervised dog on the trail....

Condensed version -

The polar bear will eat penguins even though they normally don't have access to them. We had a cardboard kayak race in the moat, Karl won, but I think he cheated with a plastic kayak with brown paper glued to the hull. Rocketsocks is in Virginia Beach. Woo's knee is much better. I told one of my cutting the cat out of a tree stories on another thread (I have two cutting the cat out of a tree stories). We have new visitors at the cafe. Rocketsocks started one of the best debates about if water is free and we watched a new WB member violate the user agreement in that thread and didn't give him a heads up because it was too entertaining.

OH we also got a Health Inspection this morning. The inspector said its very bad.

Well, sure... But, you aren't a polar bear with a new craving for Penguin Poppers. :)

I'm a bit of a food snob! Now here is a Penguin recipe to my taste

Penguin Negimaki Recipe

·
12 small scallions, trimmed to 6-inch lengths
· 1 (1-lb) piece Penguin steak (roughly 6 to 7 inches square)
· 1/4 cup sake (Japanese rice wine)
· 1/4 cup mirin* (Japanese sweet rice wine)
· 3 tablespoons soy sauce
· 1 tablespoon sugar
· 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Prepare scallions:
Blanch scallions in a pot of boiling salted water 45 seconds, then transfer with a slotted spoon to a bowl of ice and cold water to stop cooking. Transfer scallions to paper towels to drain and pat dry.
Prepare Penguin:
Cut Penguin steak with the grain holding a large knife at a 30-degree angle to cutting board into 12 (1/8-inch-thick) slices (1 1/2 to 2 inches wide). Arrange slices 1 inch apart on a very lightly oiled sheet of parchment paper or plastic wrap, then cover with another very lightly oiled sheet of parchment or plastic wrap (oiled side down) and pound slices with flat side of meat pounder until about 1/16 inch thick.
Assemble rolls:
Arrange 3 Penguin slices side by side on a fresh sheet of plastic wrap, overlapping slices slightly to form a 6-inch square with short ends of slices nearest you. Sprinkle square lightly with a pinch of salt, then lay 3 scallions (with some white parts at both ends) across slices at end closest to you and tightly roll up meat around scallions to form a log, using plastic wrap as an aid. Tie log with kitchen string at ends and where meat slices overlap. Make 3 more negimaki rolls in same manner.
Marinate rolls:
Stir together sake, mirin, soy sauce, and sugar in a small bowl until sugar is dissolved.
Put rolls in a small baking dish and pour marinade over them, turning to coat. Marinate, loosely covered with plastic wrap, turning occasionally, 15 minutes.
Cook rolls:
Heat a 10-inch heavy skillet over moderately high heat until hot, 1 to 2 minutes. While skillet is heating, lift rolls out of marinade, letting excess drip off, and pat dry. (Save marinade.) Add oil to skillet, swirling to coat bottom, then cook rolls, turning with tongs, until well browned on all sides, 4 to 5 minutes total for medium-rare. Transfer rolls to cutting board. Add marinade to skillet and boil until slightly syrupy, 1 to 2 minutes, then remove from heat.
Cut off and discard strings, then cut each roll crosswise into 6 slices. Pour sauce into a shallow serving dish and arrange negimaki in sauce.

Sounds good... However, if you get the polar bear hooked on that recipe, he will never leave. Oh, and you will have to cook for him. I mean, after you get done cutting down trees to rescue cats. :)

I have a question... Why do hikers assume someone staying in a tent MUST be homeless? The guy has not been reported to even talk to hikers, yet they are assuming he is a homeless, pan handling, maniac, alcoholic, mentally unstable, freak... who is out to hurt them. That is stunning to me...

Capt Nat
08-20-2012, 09:58
Homeless people should be banned from the trail. They are professionals in an amature sport. Everyone should be required to show proof of a residence at any time while hiking. They are so different from us. They go days without bathing. They eat whatever they can find. They gladly accept handouts. They try to live as cheap as possible. They smell bad. They sometimes hitchhike. It's just awful. I can't abide these types.

Catching up on some threads around here and have a few points I'd like to make...
1. I have never known homeless people to do laundry....
2. wouldn't have thought a discussion on the religious motivations of trail angels should go under "straight forward" forum title (humour might be more appropriate).
3. I think polar bears are only not known for eating penguins because they're at differen poles and if they found them, they'd eat them.
this type of penguin is delicious..

If you hang a white shirt, isn't that the signal for surrender? You...or the hiker...must be in obvious peril. It just strikes me as hilarious that someone sees a tent and assumes that the occupant is a homeless, begging, axe-murderer. What if the guy just found a nice place to camp for a bit and was enjoying the area? It would totally crack me up to find out this is some guy on vacation.

I've been reading a couple of rants about religion and what constitutes a thru hike and after spending the past 3 weeks on the trail in maine that these are not issues. I met so many caring wonderful people that these are not issues at all. although everyone knew I was just a section hiker it didn't matter. I meant a couple from texas, fidjit and dot.com, who told me up some of the dificulties that they had in counter dot on the trail and have since decided to hike the portions of the trail that they want and even skip the more difficult sections like the mahoosucs. is there hi there journey and they want to enjoy all of it without being terrified. it doesn't matter whether they finish the entire trail inch by inch or not it's still a great journey .com called me today to see how I was doing knew that I had gotten off the trail there is no us and them it's all just us and it's what makes the trail such a great place and a great community

Tied it to the cats tail! I'm thinking maybe that is what caused him to run up the tree in the first place to get away from whatever had his tail. Of course I could be wrong!

Oops. That had to have been the cause... Hate it when that happens.

I guess it's time to start making the t shirts. after 100 pages this cafe has truly become a place where we could just hang out and have fun. I don't wanna start reading the entire thread so can someone remind me of the slogan we came up with? or will it just be hikerboys cyber cafe-its all good.? anyone know of a source for hemp t shirts, ive tried weaving kelp into cloth, but the results were less than ideal. I wanna go withhemp.

Go back to kelp - it couldn't smell any worse after a week (or month, or thru) of hiking than when it was new.

Funny thing is I only get about 50 more before evening...:D
