I really like hiking it. It's about an hour from my house, has lots of stairs, that are new. but the waterfall is nice, and is a tough loop, no matter how you go. I recommend starting fro the upper lot, and go clockwise. that gets the falls first, then the view from the base, then the summit. Worth it if in the area! Met a couple from Morehead City, and they were thrilled with it!

Carnival Cruises has just hit stupid. They are running an advertizement against folks that go to fair or a World of entertainment. They are running an ad of African Americans upside down in a carnival vs a cruise - as a cruise ship for the second time is stranded from a fire in the engine room... No toilets, drift, no hot food, folks sleeping on deck due to the odor. get my drift? My wife can keep her silly ship ride... they are loosers.

Went to camp there in the mid 60's. Headless Hattie was probably invented by counselors to keep us from hiking over to Stone Mountain, which was very visible and nearby.

I saw the goats through a telescope regularly. Never did see Headless Hattie though.

My first cruise was on the Triumph! in 2000. was fairly new then, so now at more than 13 years... I like seeing/visiting briefly countries, to know where I'd like to go again, on my bucket list. My biggest complaint about a cruise is not getting to spend much time in any country. It's just a tease. WE tend to take the type of shore excursions that are off the beaten path; not the stay in port shopping kind. Took the train that parallels the Panama Canal, so went from Caribbean to Pacific and back, and saw ships in the locks and such. a river trip in Costa Rica and another in Belize, and in Puerto Rico. A cruise is what you make of it. Like any vacation.

and honestly, we didn't do the clubs and stuff on the boat. Dinner at night, and maybe a show. Hanging out by the uncrowded pool while others were gambling or eating or whatever.

But again, many vacations are BIG car trips, drive a LOT to stay a short time at lots of places. That's how I summited Mt. Washington!! LOL

Yum.... sounds delish!! You're not that far away either.. hummm.... tempting. :) Good to hear you are well.... did you catch that trout?

Been fishing each of these past three beautiful days. We're going to have smoked trout, fried trout, gumbo with trout, trout kebabs..... well you get the idea. I love gathering and enjoying local food. Morels will be ready soon.

We got a flight from CLT to Ft Lauderdale, cheaper than my folks paid to park! and then got bumped on the flight back, with 2 free round trip tix anywhere in the lower 48. Sweet! had a GREAT (cheap) trip to CA, NV, and AZ!
CLT is undoubtedly my favorite airport.

I take that back. It's my favorite airport for changes and layovers. Billings is my favorite. 3 gates. Only 1 is ever operating. You park front row (no fee) right outside the main door.

It has been so pretty lately! :) Sounds like fun combined with some good eatin. Hang on to your hat tho. We might be getting some more snow tomorrow. Fine with me, the last 3 inches are gone already! :)

Going down 81 south today, we have some major blow down action going on... there were blow downs every where on 81, luckily none of them made it to the Interstate!
Oh yeah, one more thing about fishing. This girl had 3 younger brothers that liked to fish but they never seemed to catch much. I"ll never forget going with them to fish one time. They put the worm on the end of the hook but somehow the nasty worm-hook ended up in my long freshly washed hair. NEVER AGAIN ;)

Re our Bib Track shelters - bit different from AT shelters.
There are about 3 designs, all 3 sided with water tanks and at least two picnic table benches with at least one under cover.
All prefabricated in ur prison system and then erected on site under supervision of Forestry Dept workers.
Labour onsite is usually volunteers from sporting/social clubs in district but sometimes bushwalking clubs or even prisoners on work release.
Usually takes 1-2 years to replace a burnt one I think. If the hut burns down they usually replace the privy fast and put a small water tank feeding off it (the roof of it that is).;)

I'm not really back - just logging off the computer before it melts down.
Retiring to the only room in the house that's cold.

The countdown to leaving work is nearing it's end but I've decided I probably won't have a sick day.;)
It has been under consideration.
Congrats on the countdown. I keep emailing the girls with how many days left to make them panic, and it's working. I keep getting these OMG's will you stop doing that. (LOL)
Talk to you later. I'm helping the other homeowners (some) paint the pool deck area. We do a lot of the fix up stuff around here to keep the maint. fee down.

I think Mike will be well gone by then. He's looking at about 2 weeks I think.
I have a Timothy and a Daniel. One answers to Tim and the other to Daniel.
Timmy, Dan or Danny will get a poor response.
Don't look at me to find out why.
I just fathered them.

Sorry HM.
I can take a lot in this world but Barry Manilow is not included...:(

Oz, I am with you on that one. I enjoy a lot of different types of music, but Barry Manilow does not fit in! About the only thing I can handle it when it has song on the highway scene in Foul Play, and even then I am tempted to fast forward.

My long time backpacking partner helped develop bomb scanners. One of the biggest problems they had to solve was how to differentiate between blocks of cheese & canned hams. Both showed up as explosives in early scans! I guess the problem has been solved since he travels the world installing & troubleshooting the system now.

Sounds like an interesting job.

If you can make a fire, aluminium foil is all you need to cook on!

Favorite Boy Scout meal is hobo dinners or aka foil packs. Put meat, potatoes, carrots, onions, and seasoning in foil and then put it on fire/coals and let it cook. Just make sure you have some tongs, although I guess you could by with sticks. Good stuff, especially when out in the woods. :)

He said that since early this morning the snow has been nearly waist high and is still falling. The temperature is dropping to near zero and the north wind is increasing to near gale force.
His wife has done nothing but look through the kitchen window and just stare. He says that if it gets much worse, he may have to let her in.

went hiking in harriman state park yesterday. 4 hrs 7.2 miles of crunchy snowy hills . glad i brought the spikes. snow had melted down to around 3-5 inches, but i was postholing 15 inches in some of the ravines. thing i love about harriman is it has so many trails and possible loop combinations, i can change routes almost wherever i need to.i had started postholing down one trail, and after a few hundred yards decided to backtrack to the last intersection and take a different route that wasnt so much work. saw some deer and a black stork or crane, couldnt get close enough to get a good look at it, much bigger than an egret, maybe 4 ft tall, saw a hairy woodpecker, but i had the park alone to myself the entire time.
good workout.
love hiking solo, my mind shuts off all the crap and i just get into the rhythm of breathing and walking, the senses come alive and i just am.
