To avoid a 10 second self destruct at all costs.
Also to reduce the incidences of GBD in WhiteBlaze by encouraging all posts be made by donating members.

Keep calling me .177 and see how long it takes someone to ask why. Probably never will though. We are not a very observant bunch. No one asked me about my latest signature. I have to change it though. It is not in compliance with the Cafe Standards.

Just remember! You don't give orders to an Australian.
We don't like the word "directive".
You ask us nicely.
We haven't taken orders well since the British sent some of our best to die on a beach as a "diversion" 98 years ago.
But a lot have died since because we've been asked to.;)

As I reach this, my orginal target for March 21st, I'd like to thank you all for making a POHO out of me.
Despite never knowing what a POHO was or even hearing of it before a few weeks ago (well HB hadn't coined the word yet), I realise that being a POHO was something I really wanted to be.
I'll never be in the same class as ChooChoo or HB but I feel I am least contributing to a good showing from the non-American contenders.
Again, thanks to you all.:D

Hokay, it's 28F out, the pack is ready and all I got to do is walk out the door and head up Mt Adams. But I'm having a hard time getting motivated to do so. Maybe because the wind is suppost to pick up big time overnight bringing in another round of artic air with it, so summiting tomorrow will be out of the question. 50+ mph gusts out of the NW with wind chill sub zero. Yep, pretty typical and in theory I could deal with it, but do I want to?

Well, I suppose. I'm always glad I made the effort to get up there. If I leave soon I'll beat the holiday crowd and score a good spot in the loft at Gray Konb. See ya later...

Well I am wide awake this morning and just caught up on all the posts I didn't read last night. Yep made the right move to just go to bed. Guess it is going to take a long time for me to become a POHO.

Has anyone else noticed a distinct drop in brain cells after spending time in the cafe? I really can't afford to lose too many. :D

Where did that stupid banana come from?

Actually .177 is the Cafe Standard for minimal IQ number required to join. I barely squeezed in.

We're dropping IQ quickly so we must start off at a higher number.

.177 is the lowest allowable. You are allowed to have a higher IQ. Don't worry 42 is fine.

Besides, you like to claim that there are no standards, but I changed my signature recently to get into compliance with one of the standards. Or maybe that was a rule, or code, or guideline. I get confused.

It all started on a cool October night in 1960 in Woolwich, Maine. 9 months later... too far back?

My brother-in-law and I (by happenstance) watched an Appalachian Trail documentary on Netflix the same night in our separate homes. We both were thinking "how can I talk my brother-in-law into this"? The next time we saw each other we were finishing each others sentences. It was decided within minutes that we would do the Maine section the following July. A few days later he texted me that I should check out this site called Whiteblaze. You know the rest.

What ever happened to R&R?

I don't know what happened to him. I haven't seen him on here in forever. See, I saw the potential you had when you came up with the R&R stuff's. R&R-where are you?

I prefer the Pogues (Irish) one though.
That's the one although we generally refer to it as "Gallipoli" and the first day is remembered as Anzac Day(25th April).

No worries Socks.
Despite the last verse, Anzac Day is bigger than ever now with it being popular I think for a combination of nationalism and anti-war (never let it happen again etc).
2015 will be the 100 year anniversary and the crowd at the dawn service in Turkey is expected to be enormous. It's already very big each year.

Just on an explanatory note about "Waltzing Matilda".
It's basically a song about being itinerant. (like a hiker really except looking for work not trail magic;)).
Poor jobless types would roam looking for work and the "swags" they carried had bed roll, billy can etc and was often referred to as "Matilda".
Waltzing Matilda is walking with your swag .

Didn't think this needed a new thread but, I'll probably be arriving in New Jersey around July 4th. Any town or anything close that would put on a celebration? No doubt there will be shows going on, but I'd have no idea where to tell you to go, as I've never attended a show in North NJ along the trail. Most likely the biggest show would be in New YorK City along the Hudson river. Maybe drop Pyroman a PM, he's from NY, has thru-hiked and as his name suggests, worked for a fireworks company...maybe he'd have a lead.

Sounds like a question for Rocket Socks.I use to work for a fireworks company, and many shows were in Northern NJ, but not near the trail. Some of the shows I worked at were in Randolph, Netcong, Livingston, just to name a few. the Netcong show was always a good one(big) but you'd need a car or ride to get there as it not what I'd call near the trail. Maybe google NJ fireworks shows 2013..couldn't hurt..I'll see what I can find.

http://www.new-jersey-leisure-guide.com/fireworks.html

found this

Actually .177 is the Cafe Standard for minimal IQ number required to join. I barely squeezed in.

Assuming the decimal point was a typo, a 177 is not shabby (some claim Einstein was only 160). Of course maybe that decimal was not a typo.

Hey welcome z9rsrisk... good for you, so you hike once a week?

Yes - I have a small, under-used state park near my house I like to hike in. It is Michigan, but with the sand dunes, I get some good terrain. It's my exercise, plus, I will through one of these days when I find about 6 months free time. Probably retirement. I am going on a 70 mile loop in the Northern LP in May with my daughter - shake down some of the gear I have been accumulating lately. See if really am doing as well as I would like to think...

what route did you go up?

Lowes path, the most direct path up there. I didn't make the summit by any means. I only went about 1/2 mile above tree line. I was trying for Adams 4, but it was getting late, the snow and wind were picking up and all I had with me was a camara, so decide that was far enough. Much higher and I would have been more exposed to the wind and getting into the clouds. Over night the temps dropped from 20's to single digits and the wind from just a breeze to knock you to your knees and blowing snow, so glad I made the effort yesterday.

It was a pretty busy weekend up there, the Knob was at capacity (16) and a few hardy souls were camped out at the Log cabin, the Perch and Crag camp. Most headed down today, but meet a few on thier way up as I came down.

This shot is just before the last pitch to get up on Adams 4.

Here's my thoughts on the subject. I think the female forum was designed to handle strictly female issues while hiking the trail! Another one would be since females are in the minority, on the trail, they may prefer only female hiking partners, so having a female forum, just for those 2 reasons alone, is GREAT! Besides, sometimes we just like "girl talk". :D

I have noticed that guys don't pay close attention to the "female only" forums very well. I don't think that it's a problem unless the OP finds it a problem.
If I started a thread like that and a guy commented on it- I would say, "Hey, whatcha doing in here, boy!" I can't imagine myself really getting all upset about it unless I felt like the male had problems with respect and boundaries. If I got that "vibe", I could get a lil mean and ugly.

Gay men posting in the female's forum?... How in the world could you possibly tell unless the person just came right out and blurted it out? EGads!

Yeah I think both countries had similar poor treatment back then and better now.
The vets for Vietnam copped the reaction of "why did you fight it?"
Now there is much better realisation that the man carrying the rifle doesn't make the decisions. He's doing a job for us.

That was an early one!!
Don't remember it. Only familiar with the "bigger" Bruce Lee movies.
The 60's and 70's may have had the best music but face it, we had some pretty crap movies.

Given our geographic location, fair to say we get more info on South East Asia than you guys.
Pretty sure it's Thai boxing most places but Chinese means more to the American market and Tinseltown.

We had a pleasant 27C yesterday and 29 today.
34,37,38 for next three and then some relief back into mid/high 20's again.
Hopefully the last sustained heat wave is behind us.
Several fires around today again. Smallish ones so no real problem.
Reminds me - I'm just gonna check and see if I can get an update on possible damage to the Bib by the one down south last week.

I'm pretty sure that I can close my eyes and visualise it.
I think I'll just concentrate on each days target.
The Katahdin images can wait to the end.

Sorry to hear that, Oz. :( Do they get a lot of wildfires in that area?
Far too many.
Eucalypt forest sheds a lot of bark and leaves etc year long. It generally doesn't "rot down" like leaves in a deciduous forest and builds up in what is referred to as a "fuel load".
Control to prevent rampant fires is to "control" burn small sections in the cooler seasons. Due to a couple that got away (i.e. became uncontrolled) and destroyed a lot of property DEC (our forestry department) have been overly cautious in their controlled burns. Along with a lack of funding for them (your Forest Service can no doubt relate) this means fuel loads are very high pretty much everywhere.
At least this fire was caused by lightning strike so we don't have any undesirables to hunt down.

Karma13

Sounds like a hard situation to manage, especially with funds being as tight as they are these days.

Well, hopefully you'll be leaving the wildfires behind in another few weeks!

Blackwood hut is one of about 15 huts (out of 48) that have permanent fire bans because of fire risk and fuel stoves only are permitted.
It is right next to some commercial pine plantations as well as the eucalypt.
The sction immediately south of Blackwood is the first in which the Track goes through Karri forest (our tallest trees).

Useless trivia time in honor of President's Day:

Can anyone name the 1st year the Washington quarter was minted? Subtract 200 from that number and you have Washington's birth-year.

Can anyone name the 1st tear the Lincoln penny was minted? Subtract 100 from that number and you have Lincoln's birth-year. His 150th was commemorated by the memorial back penny and his 200th by the shield back penny.

Off to greet the day. I did my duty over at the Jukebox.

just stopping in to make sure no one's been messing with my stool since I was last here a few days ago.
