Far too many.
Eucalypt forest sheds a lot of bark and leaves etc year long. It generally doesn't "rot down" like leaves in a deciduous forest and builds up in what is referred to as a "fuel load".
Control to prevent rampant fires is to "control" burn small sections in the cooler seasons. Due to a couple that got away (i.e. became uncontrolled) and destroyed a lot of property DEC (our forestry department) have been overly cautious in their controlled burns. Along with a lack of funding for them (your Forest Service can no doubt relate) this means fuel loads are very high pretty much everywhere.
At least this fire was caused by lightning strike so we don't have any undesirables to hunt down.

Oz, does the Eucalypt forest mean lots of koala?

Is it normal to to leave your nearest and dearest for 6 months to get dirty, hungry, wet, cold and miserable in a strange land?

Yeah - of course it's normal!:D

You will find that it isn't so strange. And you will have a hard time believing all the new friends you are going to make. If I didn't have other commitments this year I think I would go try again. Maybe next year or just a section this year.

Hey all you PoHos!
just stopping in to make sure no one's been messing with my stool since I was last here a few days ago.
Had a busy weekend, and the first half of this week looks like more of the same due to a big project deadline at work.
It's a lot more fun being a PoHo than a WoHo :(
see you mid-week!

Refining my cold breakfast drink. I have gleaned all the threads on this site and have combined all the suggestions (well the ones I like). I want substance, energy, and caffeine every morning. I also know there will be many times I won't want to heat water for my proverbial oatmeal and coffee. A have tried a few refinements and this is what it seems to be funneling down to:

8 scoops of Nido
2 packages of Carnation Instant Breakfast
2 scoops of Trader Joe's Instant Coffee
1 Package of Butterscotch instant pudding
1 tbsp of honey
add just enough water to mix
2 Poptarts and away we go

Too many threads on the subject already. Just sharing.

I don't have that much talent. The Nido scoop size is pretty small. Only planning 2 meals a day with the most caloric dense nuts on the planet being my main snack all day. Going to have my fair share of Trout (pretty confident about that, caught my fair share in Maine). Breakfast is the largest meal for me and should be for all.

Be you may have noticed that I have evaded your question. I will weigh it next time and let you know. This mix is fairly light given that it is almost all powder before the water is added.

A few classic battles come to mind right now. :cool:A bunch of years back my kids got these game boy games....I never really played with them...until one day I found a game that had Risk on it...My kids don't play with these anymore....but I sure do. I take that thing everywhere there could be possible down time. I've never played any of the other strategy games on the market..maybe one day, some of them seem pretty cool, and I understand they even have tournaments...crazy man.

I never know who is serious and who isn't. Are you really planing on catching trout? And are you talking about the AT?

Absolutely. I would never try it on a thru hike. I am doing just the Maine section this year. I am a bit familiar with this sort of thing up here. When I was a young man it was the only type of hiking I did. Me and a couple of guys would pick a spot up north and just head down a brook for miles. When we had enough we would hike out. Never took a compass. Just hiked by the topography. Not very smart, but we did it a lot. I grew up hunting, fishing, and trapping in Maine. Like I said, I would not recommend it on a thru hike. It requires too much time, detours, and local knowledge.

With that said, feel free to not take anything else I say seriously. http://www.smileyvault.com/albums/userpics/10001/coffee-news.gif

It is likely to hold Brookies. It (The West Branch of the Piscataquis River) sorta' follows the trail for 6 or 7 miles flowing from west to east. I will not be fishing that part of the AT. I will likely leave my fishing gear in Monson. I must warn you that the fishing regulations vary greatly from one hole to the next. It is more complicated than reading the tax laws. It is real easy to be breaking the law without knowing it. I plan on making a list of spots that have the exact same regulations and fishing only in those spots. I will be fishing just the 100 mile wilderness.

Coach, I think getting out and hiking will do us all good. :) Max Lucado once wrote about when fishermen don't fish. Took his family on a fishing trip, but one day when it was raining they stayed in the cabin and everyone started getting on each other nerves.

Same with hikers, we all like to hike, but when limited to just cyber hiking, eventually we start getting on each other nerves. Too much cabin fever in WB some times. My experience on the AT is that people are much nicer than what you generally see on WB.

So here is to a short winter, and nice spring weather for everyone to get out there and go hiking! :sun

Okay, that makes a lot more sense. I was wondering where the trout were because the section I did last spring there were few streams that looked even remotely like they could have fish in them. And then there is the burden of getting proper fishing permits.

Most places yes. There are some places in the 100 mile wilderness that are no fishing or fly fishing only. You will do fine I suspect. It takes a license and a bit of reading. There are fish to be had, but at an investment of time that most AT hikers can't afford.

Remember the Groucho Marx one about wanting to join a health club and rules against being Jewish, and he asked if his son could go in the pool up to his waist since he was just half Jewish. While probably intended for humor, I thought it helped show the irony/stupidity of racism at the time.

Yup. I remember... I mean heard of that one too. I fear there is a lot of prejudice left. We are moving away from skin color/culture and toward a prejudice against ways of thinking. The 1st type had to die (not saying it is dead yet). It had no defensible position to wage a successful and lasting campaign. The 2nd type is just starting to show its true potential. Benjamin Franklin warned against it when he requested that prayer be part of the Constitutional Convention. We as a country are becoming more divided every day. This is done by design and by people who think it benefits themselves as they sell things in the guise of benefiting us. It benefits no one as we will see if it continues unchecked.

Drugs and alcohol...that's a hard way to continue to go through life....there's so much more. Sometimes when people are in there full blown addition, they just can't seem to find there way out. Mike Star (bass player for alice in chains???) who was also on celebrity rehab died about a year after finishing the show.

I love this song and it fits in with what your saying socks. Not long ago I lost a friend I've had since high school because he drank himself to death. At the 4:40 mark Stevie opens up and addresses his own addiction.

Oh, and who could stack the most blocks... 54 is still the record :D...Yep, our home version has the little "wooden armies", as apposed to the little plastic ones sold today.

Okay, that makes a lot more sense. I was wondering where the trout were because the section I did last spring there were few streams that looked even remotely like they could have fish in them. And then there is the burden of getting proper fishing permits.Fishing is a God given right....but wardens don't seem to agree with that....So I always buy a license.

divide and conquer is not new to us. social mores have and ebb and flow, just like the tides and the changing of seasons, we go through cycles of tolerance and intolerance, and it usually worsens during difficult economic times, as we look for a scapegoat.
the ability to keep an open mind is the only requirement here in the cafe. something we should all teach our kids, to question everything,to dream, and to respect those who dream differentlyI hope I will always have an open mind...to have a closed mind also closes ones own soul....well said HB.

In the strict Japanese sense syllables aren't numbered, characters are but for English it is 5, 7, 5.
Bit more to it than that, but that's the starting point. Search on Wikipedia and you'll get more.

My day was supposed to be a short run to a city hospital (I deliver linen for those that wonder - at least I did until an hour ago).
Then a long run to a country one (120 mile each way).
Backing in at the first one my 6 month old truck "died".
Dirty fuel in the injectors suspected.
5 1/2 hours of mis management by my bosses, the truck company and the roadside assist people and the tow truck arrives.
Jacko catches a train back to the laundry and knocks off....FOREVER!:)

At least it's over!

My first run for a company I used to work for was from Sturgis to east coast in a rented box truck. I went back way to avoid a notoriously bad weight station for MC vendors. I promised a friend a glass from Wall Drug. A tourist stop. I went past town when I was headed toward it & I still had 1/4 tank of fuel & figure no problem only 60 miles to go. Middle of noplace it dies like it ran out of fuel. I had no cell phone at the time & decided & would be hiking to the small community I could see a few miles across the plains. I don't think I got 100 yards when a farmer pulls up in his tractor. I told him it felt like I ran out of fuel. He pulls an old (now) bag phone from under his seat. Calls his wife for a number. Dials that & gets the local fuel company. They had a truck was at the group of houses I could see. A few minutes later he pulls up & looks at my truck & ask's does it run out of fuel just under 1/4 tank? Had me fueled & going within 1/2 hour of breaking down. Turns out it was a design defect that year & there was a retrofit that got installed once I got back.

Australian phones have area prefixes for the state (or sometimes pair of states) you are in.
WA and SA it is 08, Victoria it is 03.
There is a autoparts company in Melbourne Victoria that has the same phone number as my wife's phone number at her government job desk.
She gets several calls a week from WA or SA people wanting parts that fail to dial the 03 first.

I didn't use this truck yesterday and it only had 1/8th tank. Despite it being nearly new, we think that some dirt in the tank must have sloshed into the line when I popped it into reverse. Only just got off the street - major artery into city just before rush hour.
