I am trying to narrow down what 3 or 4 layers of clothing I should buy, to be comfortable during all weather conditions of the AT. I have been searching the Internet and have reached "data overload".

I need your expert opinions based on your experience.

Please provide your list of items specifying:

Brand, Description and Weight.

You folks have responded wonderfully to previous questions in the past.

Thank you.:)

Smartwool socks, three pairs lasted the whole trail. one on my feet, one drying on my pack, one dry in my pack. 2 pair liner socks (they dry quicker than wool) Two synthetic undershorts, (wash and dry on pack) A mans bathing suit, nylon. Good long johns. one synthetic t-shirt. Fleese top, fleese hat, ball cap,(gore tex) Nylon shorts, Froggs toggs, top and bottom. One long sleeve shirt, synthetic. That pretty well did it the whokle trail. Added a long sleeve top when fall and snow came in late fall in Maine but sent t-shirt . Also carried three bandanas, used for everything from pot holders to towels. Tempertature extremes were 20 degrees in Georgia and Maine to 100 plus in Virginia and Pa. If you layer you can get by on very little and many hikers carried less clothes than I did. I layered the clothes listed sbove to fit the conditions, very cold; t shirt,(long sleeve when I carried it) long johns, shorts, fleese, froggs toggs top and bottom. Cold rain, fleese, shorts and froggs toggs, warm rain, shorts, t shirt and froggs toggs. I wore the smartwolls with liners bith summer and winter. If your socks are damp, not wet, toss them in your sleeping bag at night and your body heat will dry them. When you thru hike you quickly learn to wear and layer what you have to stay as comfortable as possible.

Here is what I'll be taking this summer, although I'm going to be in the west where conditions are a little different, and the land is more isolated. There is, of course, the possibility of snow in some regions, even in the summer, as well as 100 degree heat. Look in the Articles section for a gear list of stuff I took on the AT last summer.

Wearing:

Underarmor draws (about 2 oz)
Underarmor turf shirt (long sleeve, 5.7 oz)
MEC Simplex pants (Schoeller Dryskin, like tights, 13 oz)
Bandana (PCT Class of 2003 brand, you can't buy it)
Fox River running socks (about 2 oz)
Asics Gel Trabuco Running shoes
Sunday Afternoons adventure hat (sun hat, 3 oz)

In the pack:

MEC midweight thermal top (8 oz)
MEC midweight thermal tights (6 oz)
2 pairs Fox river running socks
Feathered Friends Hyperion down jacket (14 oz)
Integral Designs eEVENT rain jacket (8.7 oz)
Fox River liner gloves (1 oz)
Wigwam hat (warm hat, 2 oz)
GoLite Reed Pants (rain, 4.8 oz)

When July rolls around, I'll change out the MEC pants for a pair of shorts.
