I finally got the screen saver done that I have been putting together for months now. I think I have looked through almost all the photos on WhiteBlaze and think I have come up with some good ones. I have put a 10 second delay on the photos. I hope that will be enough. I have labeled some of the photos but not all of them. I did not think that all of them needed to be labeled. Maybe I should not have labeled any of them. But I did. All the photos are photos of the Appalachian Trail or were taken from the Appalachian Trail with the exception of mug shots of well know people of the Appalachian Trail. I have also included some background music that can be turned off in the screen saver settings.
I hope everyone that downloads this will enjoy it.

7,868 KB which is just under 8 megs.
Download version with music here: Music version 1.0 (http://www.whiteblaze.net/screensavers/WBscreensaver.exe)

I have also included a version without the music for those that don’t want the music or done want to download such a big file. It is the same identical screen saver but without the music.

3,586 KB which is 3 ½ megs without music
Download version without music here: Non Music version 1.0 (http://www.whiteblaze.net/screensavers/WBscreensaverNM.exe)

Very cool indeed! I have installed on my work PC and can't tell you how many people have asked for it. Over half of them didn't even know what the AT is, but appreciated the beauty protrayed thru the pics.

Yup, I downloaded the screensaver too, it's great.

Troll, perhaps you can put all the pics into a single album and allow slideshow viewing for members like Fiddlehead that are on public computers?

Also, I didn't download the music version. Is there an add-on or would I have to download the entire program seperately. Is it recommended for dial-up?

Thanks...

There is nothing differnet with the music version. In fact if you don't want to listen to the music you can go into the screen saver proprties on the music version and mute it. Both version are identical except one has music. The music is nothing spectacular it is just the music to Dancing with Wolves.

Thanks for the fantastic screensaver. I'm not sure if looking at the photos helps mark time until March or intensifies the need to be there. Great Job!!!

What an amazing screen saver. The choice of musical score was also a master stroke. Dances With Wolves is one of my all-time favorites. The story, the score, the cinematography. I guess I know which film I'll be watching tonight.

I'm not sure I'd admit this to non-hikers (they wouldn't get it anyway), but the first time I viewed the screen saver with the sound turned up my eyes got a little misty. Thanks for making this available to all of us and thank you for making this site what it is.

When I installed and watched the slide show for the 1st time, when "Last Campfire" appeared on the screen, it brought tears to my eyes.

What music plays in the background? Whatever it is, it's perfect!

If I remember correctly when I created the screen save I used the music "Dances with wolves".

I just downloaded it and installed it and it worked fine for me. I found that when I downloaded it I had to save it to the hard drive and then open it up from the hard drive to get it installed properly instead of running it from the download.

I'm a network admin and we have a group policy that blocks users from installing screen savers, so I'm pretty sure that's why you couldn't install it on a work system.

Sweet job Troll!!! I love the progression of pics. The Charlies Bunion pic is actually The Chimney Tops, though, but still part of the same Anakeesta formation. I wish the AT jutted away from NF gap (fat people overlook) down to this area and then came back up to Clingmans Dome, but that would definitley make for a difficult day.

Thanks a ton for that.

Sunrise at Icewater Spring is one of the jewels of the trail. Even I can take a decent pic from there.

The only thing I can think that needs to be added is a frame of Robin Williams looking sincerely into the screen and saying "Thank You". Don't know why but kept waiting for him to pop up in there. Kinda looks like a hiker anyway.

Again, thanks for that. Am ferrying it around to my peeps as we speak.

That's very likely. A huge percentage of free screensavers available on the net install worms or spyware along with the screensaver. Therefore, many/most businesses block their installation.

I just have to say Troll that the work you put into this is amazing. I am not sure how many pics there are, but I will eventually get to them all. The music is a spot on match.

This project that you have created, reinforces my need to hike the Appalachian Trail ten fold.

I think it would be great as a slide show for many Trail Days presentations to come.

Thanks again for your tireless efforts to the WB and the entire hiking community.

Any other penguins out there succeed in getting the screen saver to run under WINE? It installs just fine for me, but so far, no show.

Should I expect the screen saver to run immediately, or does it have a built-in time delay. If the latter, how long?

For those scratching their heads over the penguin reference, I'm trying to get the screen saver to run on my GNU/Linux box (Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon, fyi). WINE is a Windows(tm) API replacement that lets us run Windows(tm) apps with varying degrees of success. The penguin is the "official" GNU/Linux icon/mascot.

I am not sure this will run there. I have not tried it on my Linux system. I don't see why it wouldn't though. As far as when it should start running, it all depends on what you have your screen saving set up for on your desktop.

Hi, I am new on here. Just wanted to say Hi and thanks for the screen saver. The great pictures will have to do til I can hike the trail myself. I am not only new on here, but I am also new to hiking, other than a few mile hike through the woods on occasion. I can already see that this site is going to be one of my favorites. Any advice for a newbie will be appreciated. Advice on locating some cheap equipment will also be appreciated. Thanks
