2 days and counting until I leave for the CDT. Doing some last minute gear adjustments - hanked out the canister stove and going with alcohol - making the actual ring to hold my pot this afternoon. Last minute decision tent or tarp. My pack says tarp but my head wants tent.

My itinerary will be posted tonight. And I have been informed of some of the few places I can get internet access on my journey.
Peace Out!

Have a fantastic trip, Blister!!

I am sure you are going to LOVE the CDT. I am sure that you are going to love the Wind River Range in Wyoming. Make sure you make a detour into the Cirque of the Towers, its well worth heading a little bit off trail.

As far as the zero day thing - well the best way to deal with that is to check my posts. I will tell ya where I am stayin, for when and how long. All it takes is a phone call and a credit card numba. I'm flattered.

Blister, have fun! I know you will. Do yourself a favor and bring an extra days food into the "Bob" with you. 5 days from E. Glacier to Benchmark just doesn't seem like enough to me. Especially just starting out with fresh legs. I'd send you some Thai food but i think the shipping takes about 2 weeks to the states + getting it to MT. I'll wait till i come stateside in Sept. Don't forget the do-badders two rules now! fh

Greetings all! I am in Montana after three days of Amtrack. The ride wasn't soo bad - spent one good day in a blurr of bacardi 151. At least it made the mundane travel go a little faster. To FH - I ran into mark and have updated him on your news of life - he sends his regaurds, I made plans with him to talk later as he was busy doin some stuff for the other tourists. Still no sign of the girl mary jane at sorrano's. I'll check later once they open up. I will be here in East Glacier until Monday - have to pick up a package from REI at the PO. Also ran into Chris this morning from here at whiteblaze. He had a pretty tough week. He had to bail off the high trail because of the snow. I guess my original plan to take the lower route will be the best bet. Couple of other hikers in town as well. All had some trouble with the higher routes. After I am done doin some computer stuff - I'm headed to get by backcountry permits at two medicine. It is incredible here - Looking out the window to snow covered peaks. I'll check back tomorrow. Peace out from Montana!!!! :banana

Sorry, just reminiscing. Good luck in the big wide open. Will be sending some packages full of love (might have to waterproof them). Post when you can, hike when you can't.

Take care.

Got my advanced reservations for my campsites, and will be picking up the permit tomorrow on the way to the trail. Getting my food ready and then gonna sit back and drink some beer. Should be on the trail by 1pm - small day only 9 miles. I should be checking in via email with my weeks adventure through glacier in about a week folks. Stayed tuned - the adventures with blister are bound to be exciting and full of stories. Peace out and I love you all! :dance

Hello and greetings ya'll
So I did Glacier. Took the low route. I have to say the views really arn't that bad - granted your looking up at the vistas. The hiking went pretty well - my biggest day through the park was a 22.3 and one illegal campsite on one really windy day. Only 2 blisters on Blister's feet - and they havn't needed my special surgery - Fiddlehead has watched my blister therapy - it's not fun. So I have the hiker tan. Actually was feeling like Baltimore Jack at trail days. Skin has been peeling off my face in chunks and yes I was wearing sunscreen. Alot of open meadows along the lower route! Burnt! I headed into the Bob Marshall than had a change of heart and walked out. I only met one thru hiker who caught up to be - an older gentleman. I was really hoping to hook up with somebody at least thru the Bob Marshal. I don't like to be daring alone. So I hitched back into east Glacier - spent 3 days hanging out with some of the blackfeet indian tribe, rented a car and I now sit in Leadville, Colorado for the forth of july weekend. Then it will be back to Bozeman to go through Yosemite and the winds, tetons, ect...
Since this is NOT a thru hike, but a summer of adventure I do not feel bad about jumping around, the thru hike will come and it will be just that. Great thing about the long distance community is that the house in which I am staying, the first dude I met already knew who I was. He at one time hiked with Wild Child and knew all about me. What stories do people tell about me? hhhmmmm.... Anyways 5 out of the 7 people at the house right now are AT thru hikers from varied years. Alot of Colorado Trail hikers staying at the hostel a few houses up. I will be posting a NEW Maildrop list!!!!!!!! Since my trip has taken a couple of flips - it's all good. Life is good. :sun

Rock on Chris!

Very good to hear from you....will be thinking of you next weekend in Duncannon, where we will no doubt raise a glass (or three) in your honor.

Hey Blister! Good to hear your having a great time. Wow from the "BOB" to Leadville CO. Both great places but tons of area in between, aye?
While you're in Leadville, maybe you can hike the section from twin lakes southbound to at least cottonwood pass if possible. really beautiful stuff.
Now that i know where you are posting, i will keep better track of you.
Here (in Phuket) we had a great 4th of July celebration at a friends huge house complete with a traditional thai band and dancers, and a very memorable singing of our national anthem by all the Canadians who were there. (they did it as a gift to us as we played at their Canada Day party 3 days before) I got burned a bit from the fireworks but that was mostly the boozes fault.
Enjoy that trail. It's a beauty!

Yo Blister ....keep an eye out for Merlin and Han Solo. Saw both of them last Saturday (7/2) hiking northbound on my way to Yellowstone. Merlin was 10 miles north of Rawlins and Han Solo was about the same distance north of Dubois.

Oh yeah, and speaking of Rawlins ...it's only 1.5 hours up the interstate from Laramie. So, if you want/need some time off trail just let me know. You're itin shows Rawlins on 7/31 which is a Sunday. I could definitely drive out there if necessary.

Hike safely ...

Sounds like a plan but, you may have a problem. Unless things have changed, Atlantic City does not have a post office. They have a great bar and restaurant though. The Merc! After ordering and eating burgers and beers the new owners started feeding us shots of schnapps. Yeehaw!

There's also a good B&B back around the corner. I don't think it was more than $25 per person.

There's a trail angel in South Pass City who'll put you up and feed you, if you're nice. She works at the store which houses the post office, the same as your zip. Her name is Barb. Make sure to stop here first.

Thanks Sly I will be checking both towns for mail - according to jim and jenny site there was a post office there. regaurdless - I will be sending myself maps - anything sent other than Big Sandy Lodge is just gonna be a perk.
And as far as Rawlins for my birthday it is just gonna have to do! I have a feeling that turning 36 this year is going to be an intoxicating adventure. By the way West Yellowstone is a good little town. Hostel is pretty cheap and lots of diner type restaraunts - other than being tourist central.
Peace Out

In Rawlins, there's a good bar on the main street, on the left, heading east not far from the PO. We stopped there and this guy asked what we were doing, thought it fantastic and bought the 6 of us, a beer. Then, he insisted we stay the night, bought us dinner that night, the next, and food for us to eat at home. We stayed 2 nights and had a blast!

Check it out. I can't remember the bar's name, but it's after another "cabana" type place that was closed during the day. The guys name is RJ, in his 30's, a little rotund, dark hair and glasses. He's cool. He'll definately acknowledge you if you go in with your pack.

I'd provide a photo of us drinking and dancing inside but the backcountry.net website is down.

There isn't a post office in Atlantic City, but you can do a maildrop there at the Mercantile - just be sure it says c/o Atlantic City Mercantile -- and don't expect any groceries in town, either town. South Pass has the post office and coffee/coke at one of the shops and AC has a couple of bar/restaurants (one open bfast and lunch the other lunch and dinner, IIRC) and lodging, but that's it except a telephone.

Don't forget to check the website for the BLM water update for the desert, if you haven't already.

There are a couple of friendly bars on Main St. The one Sly spoke of is in the old downtown and the other several blocks east. Between the 2 is a great resturant that looks like a house. All on the north side of Main. Even though its spread out I really like Rawlins. Friendly folks, I always got took in, etc.

Enjoy Enjoy. Wish i could be there. If you go to south pass, say hi to Barbara for me. (works in the general store, Sly told you about her) She's amazing. Enjoy the Winds! (you know when Pieps and i did our triplecrown hike, we met Farmboy (PCT 96) near Green Lake and hiked with him for a few days.
Wherever you eat in Rawlins, try to stay away from the truck stops out on the interstate. Worst food i ever had in all my hiking was there. There's a good restaurant that is a big old victorian lookin place on the main street that was very good. go for the steak, you're in steak country and they claim to make the best in WY. (although after seeing what those cows eat, i don't know how they can taste so good, it must be the cook) Don't rough it out there too much now. do it "dobadder" style. fh

The Victorian-type restaurant in Rawlins - was it called the Pantry? Not far from the Post Office. We stopped there before even checking into our motel - stinking to high heaven. They put us into a little alcove all by ourselves (so no one was near enough to smell us) with a pitcher of mountain dew and we ate and ate. I remember it fondly.

From Bozeman, make sure to take the Gallatin Divide/Devils Backbone trail south towards Yellowstone. Fawn Pass to Mammoth is pretty cush and pretty and you can totally resupply there, including things like whiskey and beer. From Mammoth, you are a little stuck but could hitch. See my latest post for some more details. Good luck with the rest of the summer.

Hey folks!
I love checking the emails from everyone, once I hit town. I almost feel loved. Anyways I am in town and loving life. Took some of my own created alternate routes. FH - you'd be proud of my navigation with so much horse pack country out here - the horse packs make their own damn umarked trails to god knows where. Anyways, I was psyched to get out of Yellowstone - got screwed with my backcountry permit and also had to use a non CDT trail and bigger miles than I wanted. I was excited to hit the wilderness and have the opportunity to do whatever the heck I wanted from there. Only ran into 2 older gentelman heading north into yellowstone just into the teton/bridger. A trail crew of 3 building a coral in the middle of nowhere. Passed 2 younger guys that could have been CDT northbound in the Heart lake trail head - they looked like they were cleaning up for a hitch maybe? Kept goin, didn't stop - it was a 20+ day. Anyhow I am still waiting for maps to catch me, I should have what I need to get past Big Sandy Lodge. I did just get the rest of the guidebooks today. Will forward later sections on down the trial. Still lonley by myself. Saw a momma grizzly and two cubs on my way to rt 26 - got a picture! I can't wait until to voyage is done so I can post my actual journal and pictures. I'll be here at least antother night (today is wed) if anyone wants to give me a ring I am staying at the Branding Iron Inn - 307-455-2893 rm 22. I will probably post again. But ya'll know the drill using the library internet - only 1/2 blocks at a time.
Peace Out

Hey Blister. Great to hear you are out there in great country. You know, for some strange reason, whenever i click on either this thread or your name (as a link) the computer crashes in my usual cyber cafe here. So, since i saw you posted yesterday, i came to a different cafe today to see where you are and how you're likin it.
I'd love to see you figuring out that gps or triangulating with the compass. You'll have to tell me all about it later.
NOw, you had a good idea that you would have to hike alone on that trail. That's the CDT. "IT's not for everybody" we used to say a lot. Hopefully you will learn to enjoy the quiet and peacefulness of hiking totally alone. MT and WY are rare places where you can often experience total silence. and it can go on for days. Try to enjoy that. (and you can hike naked all you want and don't have to worry about running into someone embarressing.)
YOu will see tons of people once you get to the winds of course. I remember one day when i had to cross a small river and there were rocks to rock hop all the way. ON the other side were about 20 people who were scared they were going to get their feet wet and waiting for someone to go first. Say hi to Barb in south pass city for me now. Enjoy! fh

Heading out today with a buddy (Peregrine Jack - was hiking with Big Stick) into the wind river range. Gonna be testing a funky piece of technology for Backpacker and Trimball. GPS/Phone/Camera. Since stick got off the trail he has been carrying both units they asked him to test. Thus I will play around with one while he carries the other, it's only more weight. Hoping to hook up with chomp in Pinedale and do some other hikes - one of them in Idaho - the Sawtooth range I think it is. For everybody who keeps asking where I am gonna be on my B-day???? The answer is ??????? Won't really know until I can talk more with chomp. Should be home late August and will try to make the whiteblaze get together in Caratunk, ME.

Recommendations?? I was pouring over the Sawtooth book and maps that I have and I was guessing about a week, maybe a week and a half of backpacking in the Wilderness area. Across the street looks cool too, the White Clould area. But a whole summer? I would love to hear the must-hit spots, and maybe some out-of-the-way spots, too. Thanks!

Hey all,
Well we all started ou this week doing a north bound trek from Steamboat Springs, CO to Encampment, WY this morning I had to hike out and find transportation to get one of the hikers I was with off the trail. Some Volunteer Forest Service camp hosts helped us out. Anyways I will be here for at least two days - definatley until my birthday, staying at the Nordic Inn hotel room 127 if anyone would like to give a ring. Once i get the chance to sit down at a computer for more than 30 minutes I will post some of the great adventures that I have encountered!!! Chomp is chomping at the bit to get out and about - myself, I could use a rest or at least a cuople of zeros. Thanks to Jester, The mayor of Billville for the great birthday package, red blaze trail magic. What are those funny looking colored latex things? Do I fill them with water and drop them from the summits of mountains??? His mom sent some great bakery items as well!!!

Well, having a real zero day off is tempting me to end this journey. Chomp is chomping at the bit and has headed for a 26 mile hike in the rockies and will be back in town to celebrate my birthday, not sure if I will head back up to Idaho with him. My next adventure may consist of renting a car and heading slowly back to the Northeast visiting friends along the way. Very much enjoyed the Mount Zerkyl wilderness, Pinedale was great hanging out with Party Girl (AT04), Big Sandy, The Cirques hike and of course Jackass Pass - I think I am definatley hooked though to do this as a thru hike possibly next year - either with Rainman or Salamander - both AT and PCT veterans. My feet and ankles are very tierd. Will be here through Monday with Peregrine maybe longer if I hang out with him to check out the Art car parade with his buddies coming into town. It feels real good to be a bump on a log right now. Still happy - just trying to figure out how to get back to the real world of responsibility - a scary thought. Hope all is well out there. Thanks to Mags and Slogger for all of their support out here. Adventures with Blister - a ever changing saga! Good hikes, good times, good friends and of course great beers!

Well guys mark your calenders - the potential real thing through hike could be next summer. I should also tell you that I have found some secret bars and new trail friends along the way to make the adventure even more fun. 24 ounce margaritas in Steamboat Springs for only $5 during happy hour - live music to boot. Lots of great people on this trip - actually sad to be heading home. I will however try and get some trail magic happening, living only .3 from the AT. I have heard through the grapevine that hikers have been staying on the property with Baltimore Jack playing host. Off to party with some crazy art car folks here - putting us up for free in a swank ski condo on the mountain. Driving around in cars that shoot flames and look like cartoon carachters. What a trip, and I mean trippy weekend!! Peace and Love all!!!!

Playing host?? Nah, all I did was throw 'em in the brook til they were fit to consort with humans, then took 'em to Five Olde to watch the Sox do some butt-whupping.....you're missing a great season.

See you soon, let Dave know if you need a ride from the airport.

Made it home. Hard to believe the last 48 hours! Jack arrived at the airport with a hiker (without a license) that drove my car for him and hence, back in Hanover. Thru hikers all about town - didn't even make it to my house and I had a job offer! Golly - that four letter word of "work" is already pounding at the door. The feel of cotton on this body is like heaven, that is if I choose to wear any clothes at all. Thanks again to all who have kept up to date with my impromptu adventure this summer. It doesn't end here for life is an adventure. A few more small hikes this summer and a couple of hiker events and then it will be down and dirty saving for the real CDT thru hike. In the next week I will be transcribing my journals as well as picking the pictures from it - this will be an unedited version and I would fear the wrath of all the "good" people out there. Hence, if there is any interest in reading my newsletter of sorts - send me your real emails and I will forward it out.

As above I made it home and have been surrounded with hiker trash ever since. Lots of hikers at the house and now I am at Glencliff hostel trying to get motivated to hike. Bag of tricks wants to get me to Maine for some slacking and trail magic, although I was thinking about just going north from here with pack. At any rate I will be between the whites and Maine just soaking up the AT and all it has to offer. Thus far I have only transcribed one entry from my summer journal to screen - ......so it will be done in time for trail days - I promise. :bse
