Hi,
Does anyone have any information about the Killington Ski Lift that takes you up to the Peak. In the thru-hikers companion it states that you can take the ski lift in the summer, but on the Killington web page it says the the lift only runs from thursday to Sunday. We are taking the Amtrak and beginning our section hike at Killington Peak on a Monday and are very disapointed that the lift might not be running. We were not planning on beginning our hike by having to hike completly uphill to the summit of Killington Peak. Are there any Vermonters out there that have any info?

The best lesson to learn about hiking is to be flexible. It’s true, the gondola runs Thursday—Sunday and if the weather is severe it might not run on those days or shut down early due to high winds or thunderstorms. Not all hikes begin with a gondola ride to the summit of a peak, time to make other plans for your Monday start. It's a lovely hike to the summit. Take your time and enjoy it.

Cindy, You are very right about being flexible, But I was really looking forward to that Gondola ride.If I knew the Gondola was closed, then I wouldn't have booked a night at the Cascades lodge for 120 dollars for the night. I would have begun my hike elsewhere, but we chose this starting point because of the Gondola ride. But like you said, Flexibility is important, so a hike to the top is in order. Is there a trail that goes up to it or are you just hiking on the Killington ski trails. Also, do you know approximetly what the distance is to get to the top.

I wouldn’t recommend hiking the ski trails because of the over the head tall Joe-Pye Weed and grasses which hide the rocks and hidden moguls and the fact that the mountain bikers pretty much have declared the trails on the slopes theirs. It’s a dangerous mix, hikers and downhill bikers.Yikes!

Hike south 6.3m on the AT from Rte 4 to Cooper Lodge, take the 0.2m blue blaze to the summit if you’re looking to bag the peak. Or take the Sherburne Pass trail south also from Rte 4 across from the Inn at the Long Trail (the former A.T.) for 2.9 miles to the A.T. at Jungle Junction. Follow the A.T. south for another 2.5 miles to Cooper Lodge where you could pick up the BB to the summit.

Change your reservations to the Inn at the Long Trail, hiker rates are a lot cheaper than $120. Their number is (802)775-7181.

Cindy,
Thank you so much for your info. We looked it up on the map and will do the Sherburne Pass trail to the AT. Without your help, you may have found us with mountain bike tire tracks across our backpacks. We are already locked in for cascades lodge so will take a taxi in the morning to the Inn at Long Trail to begin our hike. We are both very excited. Thanks again for your help. I wish I would have posted this sooner as you would have saved us some money in Taxis and room rates. Oh well.
