I'm a filter user,,, & don't mind the extra weight of the filter to ensure I won't get sick (even though I realize the chances are low). But another issue for me is to have clean drinking water (no particles floatin around). I have considered some of the other water treatment options, drops, etc,,,,, but a lot of the water sources I come across are "barely trickling",,, & in those times I have to move a few rocks, etc, to create somewhat of a bowl shaped area, & wait for the sediment to clear for me to drop my filter "acorn" into the "bowl" so I can extract the water. In those situations, I can't understand how someone not using a filter is able to fill up a bottle, whether treating w/ a solution or not. You have to get the water in the bottle/bladder first. A deep enough stream is not always available when I need it. I usually fill up right before or at camp, & don't always stay at/near a shelter (where you usually find a better/deeper running stream), & I don't want to have to fill up (at a deep stream) well before camp & haul multiple lbs of water many, many miles. Help me out fellow whiteblazers,, what am I missing? :-? Thanks!!

Yes!! I also carry a few coffee filters in case the water is in bad shape. I have a pre-filter but coffee filters are lighter.

For really hard to get water, use a towel or bandana to soak up the water then squeeze it out into your bottle, or squeeze it into a cup or bowl then filter it into your bottle.

a Pepsi bottle usually works best in these situations. try putting a leaf above a rock or ledge to funnel the water into the bottle. Or scoop it with a cup if it's really slow. I use my teeth for a filter sometimes. it works!

I've got an overkill system, and may pair it down--but it was created with adventure racing, hiking the triple crown, and overseas trips in mind.

like neo, cept using steri-pen in addition. Steri pen unit w/ hard cover (no softy case) 3.7 oz, 4 li AA batteries-- 2 ozs -- 5.7ozs for steripen
steripen prefilter for nalgene bottles-1.5oz prolly about .25 mm? just a guess mesh.

amigo--total unit weight w/ instructional waterproof bag and backflush bulb---9.7oz
has a hard plastic prefilter in the water bag but the holes are about 1mm large

Also got orikaso, dish/bowl plate which allow me to create my own runoff/waterdish.

steripen can prefilter suck out of the dish if I can't lay the amigo bag down in it...

p.s.--this is carried by 2 peeps--IF solo i'd prolly do the gravity bag and chemical--

or possibly an integrated in-line filter (4.1oz/100galcapacity/1Lmin) for my drinking hose system in conjunction w/ chemicals (3oz) and nalgene bottle (3.8oz) w/steripen pre-filter (1.5oz)to suck up or scoop water--

or sippable straw filter w/ chems
