30 June 2010, Partnership Shelter
Went to breakfast at Jerry's Kitchen this morning and ate with Sketch, Old School, and Hopper.

Hopper dropped Sketch and me off at the trail head at around 9. Sketch moved on while I sat in the parking lot for about 15 minutes. I passed Sketch after about 1/2 hour and then he caught me when I was taking a break at the entrance to Trimpi Shelter. He went down to the shelter and I moved on.

A couple of years ago, I wrote about Earl Shaffer and the project to preserve a trail shelter that he built, which at the time I had helped to disassemble; ultimately it was to be reassembled as an exhibit for the Appalachian Trail Museum.

I started at Whitetop this morning. It was very cloudy and overcast from last night’s rain.

I ran into many groups of backpackers today, most of them were on vacation, church groups, boy scouts, and adventure groups. There was one particular group that was very large with at least 25 boys in it that were also northbound. They were all taking a break with their packs off so I quickly scooted ahead of them. We drove all the way to Brevard, NC today to pick up Hoppers car today, which was at a friend’s house. Then we went to Abingdon today so we could to turn in the rental car in tomorrow morning at the agency. Hopper is going to slack pack me through the 53 miles of Grayson Highlands that I skip while she was really sick after Trail Days and I stuck with her for almost a week.

Started at Keys Gap at 10:00 today and did a quick six or so mile walk to the Appalachian Trail Headquarters. I started with Bismarck, Bluesky, Uncas and Lead Foot. We walked our own paces but we met up 1.9 mile from the ATC where we ran into a family doing a hike on a loop trail. We answered the usual questions that they asked then I started out with everyone in tow. I moved ahead and arrive at the ATC 1/2 hour before anyone else showed up. Bismarck noticed ...
