Just returned from section hike from Springer Mtn. to Neels Gap with myself and my twin 15 y.o boys. As we started our hike toward the beginning of the A.T from USFS 42 they were ahead of me. The anticipation of starting had them ahead of me which was unusual. It came very apparent to me that the day of them following me were close to over in respect of hiking. How much time is needed to hike the AT from Springer to Neels Gap. I know the distance is approx. 30 miles. But I am not familiar with the terrain. Also, what is the distance from where you start until you actually reach the start of the AT.

Thinking of starting section hike at springer for 3-5 days. I know its hot, but when would be a good time to go for the youngsters (14 yo). Any recomendations on where to end the hike etc. Any info will help. Thanks
