My family and I are almost 700 miles into our attempt to section hike the AT in 4 years. When we started last year my kids were 5, 8 and 11. They average about 18 to 20 miles per day and we usually go out for 5 to 10 days at a time. Our trailjournal is www.trailjournals.com/geigers. There is a lot of advice I could give but if you have some specific questions about portions of Virginia (almost all of which we have hiked) I would be happy to pass along what we have learned with our kids. If you fly in to Dulles, you could taxi to the AT trail on routes 66, 7, or 50, and then head south. Suggest SNP, and keeping you mileage to 10 or so miles a day, depending on how the the kids handle it. Good luck!
