Its finally come time to tell the truth about our camps that we love and work hard at. we reopened our camps to hikers in 1999. back in the 30's there were 11 logging camps between monson and abol.out of the 11 there are 3 left,we are one of them. we did not cut any illegal trail to our camps, the mahar tote rd. has been there since the logging days, we got permission from the paper co. to have a foot path to our boat dock, all we did was clear out downed trees and brush. as for that BIG orange sign it was only a snowmobile sign(10x12) after having it up for 2 mos. we realized that it was not trail friendly and made a nice sign brown w/ white lettering. as most hikers were happy that we were there, the maintainers and some purist hikers thought we just ruined the 100 mi. wilderness.back in the early days you slept in a bed every night. read the history on our web site. as the year went on our sign was taken down,as no advertising was to be placed on the a.t. we were told from mark simpson that he would recommend to the board that a sign should be made by matc,as he realized how important we were to the hikers, he came to see that as he was hiking on the trail to come see us,and heard nothing but good news about us being open for them. but the board shut it down real fast. after that we never heard from anyone. we tried to keep a buisness card up ..always taken down,so many hikers needed to know where we were for food,as some were out, emergency's, we have taken alot out to a hospital for injurys, or just want to go home, they need to know how to get to us, so i put blue dots on trees or rocks, you could see one from the trail head, we got a call from the law enforcement from virginia, saying that he was coming to see us and that they could prosecute us,was told that the matc tried to work with us....wish they did,not once did anyone speak with us,so the ranger came in and we took him up to the trail head and he sprayed camo. paint over that blue dot. that was it, he was a nice guy. glad we had a chance to at least meet him and talk about what was going on. so thats the story there. we are not going anywhere we will always be there for the hikers, for whatever their needs may be,so mr.weary when you stated that you think the companion and the other guide books should take out our camps, and you would like to see us go out of buisness because you think we cut an illegal trail .get your stories straight first. you have an open invitation to stop in and see us .we would like to meet you. I will sleep better tonight now that i wrote this, thanks to all the hikers out there that stood up for us,they know the real story cause they came in. many thanks to them!!! for the ones who complain that we are there, visit our web site and see what we are all about.happy trails Linda,Bill and our son Ben www.whitehouselanding.com
