early march trail hike?

Rate this Entry
My buddies and i were looking to hike the southern part of the appalachian trail in the first week of march Starting in Georgia. i have heard this can be a good thing and that this can be a bad thing. i was wondering if anyone who has hiked at this time of year on the App. trail can give me some knowledge on the conditions and the temperature at day and night. and Any warmer climate parts of the trail, and if we should prepare for snow or not in the higher altitude. Also any particular gear that might be helpful other than the ordinary. thanks

You could have snow, low teens, more likely mid 20's. The days can warm up nicely to 60 or so. But the nature of the mountains leads to unpredictable conditions. Carry the extra weight you need to insure relative comfort at the extremes. The low points or gaps, should be a little warmer than the higher elevations as far as where to pitch your tent or shelter at.
