I am planning to hike the entire JMT next month (July) SOBO. I am wondering how long a 4 oz or 8 oz butane canister will last? I only plan to boil 2 cups of water in the morning and 2 more cups again in the evening. I have been told that boil times take longer at high altitudes and when conditions are cold/windy, so I'm unsure of how many days I will get out of a single canister (based on the usage I mentioned). Hence, I am not sure of how many canisters to plan on. Can anyone help out?

Below is my gear list. Please feel free to give your opinions. I am debating the following, in particular: Should I bring a head net? Can I dump my convertable pants? Maps or guide book pages? Should I switch to a different bear cannister (which I hesitate to do because I own the Garcia and I know how it configures with my pack).

Reached Red's Meadow today, heading into Mammoth for dinner and drinks. Started from Yosemite on May 30th.
- encountered snow on 2nd day in Yosemite, just a few miles past Half Dome.
- snow over Donohue Pass is pretty bad. Just about everyone we met, including us, got lost for a bit.
- slow going as much of trail is covered by snow. GPS has helped a few times already
- weather has been great everyday, feels like high 70's
- Mosquitos have been okay. Pretty bad around areas you'd expect. Lakes, wooded areas etc.
- snow melting very fast
- mud not to bad, wearing trail runners and didn't bring gaiters, And wouldn't change a thing. Shoes, socks dry out in 30 mins during stop for lunch
- post office/grill at Toulumne Meadows is open 11am-5pm
- best campsites so far have been Cathedral Lakes and site on lake just before final ascent to Donohue Pass, (north side)
- stopped filtering water after Lyell Canyon
- Have passed about 6 PCTers. They know of atleast 30 behind them.Said some passes, Mather, were pretty difficult due to snow. But otherwise manageable. Hopefully their tracks will clear the way
- half dome was cool. Looks scary, but not so bad

I got my reservation for this...which says that
assuming I'm there on the day of I can get the

This is all kind of confusing for me as a first

Apparently there was a rock fall not far from Happy Isles and part of the trail is closed. However, Yosemite National Park said on their facebook page it should only be for "a few weeks." The Mist Trail is being suggested as an alternative.

I'm looking for input on a section hike that I've planned for July which is, in part, being done to prepare myself for my JMT thru hike later in the summer and also to test out all of my gear. The section hike is a loop going from South Lake over Table Mountain to Lake Sabrina, road walk/hitch to North Lake and then the popular North Lake-South Lake trip. I have all permits and booked travel a while ago.

My current schedule only allows for one night spent at elevation (about 8,000 feet at Four Jeffrey campground) prior to starting on the hike. My first night is planned for George Lake at 10,716 feet after climbing over table mountain which I believe is something like 11,600. I plan to take it really easy the first day out and I have all day to cover around 8 miles, but it is still 2,600 feet of total elevation gain at pretty high altitudes.

I realize that everyone is different and I do not recall having major issues in the past but it has been a long time since I did any hiking at higher elevations and I'm older (pushing 40 now although probably in better cardio shape than ten years ago).

I could change my plans to arrive a couple of days earlier but flight costs would be quite high to change, rental car cost would go up, etc etc ... cost of trip would probably almost double. But I also don't want to be stupid and get altitude sickness on the first day out. Any opinions would be great regarding my risk of going from Sea Level to ~8000 feet for the first night and then ~10700 for the second night after peaking at 11600 feet. Thanks.

really want to thru the jmt next summer. trying to see if there's any intrested people on here that would like to get a small group together and do it. don't know all the ins and outs/ logistics of the hike yet but that's why im starting so early.. anyone up for it? please have did atleast some backpack ing before i don't think this trip is one to cut your teeth on..

Me and a few friends are planning our JMT trip this August and I'm thinking about food options. I'm probably going to do oatmeal for breakfast and then graze during the day. I'll probably have a huge bag of trail mix and a few other snacks. What I'm stuck on is dinner, I'm thinking just going with Mountain House Freeze dried Meals but I'm not sure, I feel like I would get tired of them after 2 weeks. What do you guys plan on bringing?

I am traveling to see a relative in July and September for 3 weeks in San Francisco, CA. This will be my first time hiking out west. Looking for some recommendations on places to hike. I did notice that Yosemite was only about 4 hours away. Thanks for the suggestions and feel free to email me.

I fish everywhere I go. I rarely have a destination or path I travel where it cant be incorporated. The incorporation of Tenkara style fly fishing has made it much lighter and more packable for a UL hiker. I still have to cull through all the regs of the fine CA DFG to make sure I don't break any laws but I hope to spend some time wetting a few flies. Anyone else?IMG_20120104_150154.jpg

I'm looking for suggestions from anyone who has taken the Piute Pass side trip off the JMT into the Humphreys Basin area. In preparation for my JMT thru hike starting in late August, I'm doing the North Lake to South Lake loop in mid July. I want to see how I do at higher elevations plus this loop gives me a chance to see the Humphreys Basin and Dusy Basin, areas that I won't see on the JMT thru hike itself.

So my question is regarding where I should plan to camp after going over Piute Pass starting from North Lake trailhead. I have the Harrison North Lake-South Lake loop map and it looks like there are many lakes in the basin. Are any particularly nice for camping? In terms of mileage, I think that I could easily push on to Hutchinson Meadow for the first night but I am in no hurry since I will have at least four if not five nights to do the North Lake-South Lake loop. If anyone has ideas on places to camp in the Humphreys Basin, that would be great.

My girlfriend and I are planning on hiking the JMT in early September and are looking to ride share and/or split food resupply costs.


We're hoping to get a resupply into LeConte Canyon in the first or second week of September. It's pretty pricey individually, but fair split, so if you're planning a trip near the same time and would like a resupply in at LeConte, we'd love to share with you! We've been planning on using Rainbow Pack Outfitters, but if you know of a cheaper option, that'd be great!

Additionally, after setting up our shuttle, we'll be in Lee Vining, looking for a ride to Yosemite Valley on Tuesday, September 3rd. We'd like to arrive mid-morning or early afternoon. If any of you are making that same drive, we'd love to split gas costs and provide driving company!
