Airing out my WM Lynx last winter after a chilly night in the White Mountains

My pals at Gossamer Gear sent me one of their brand new Kumo Superlight backpacks the other day to take for a test drive. It's not like I need a new backpack, nor can I afford new backpacking... read more

Planning for an Appalachian Trail Thru-Hike

by TONYDASILVA on MARCH 24, 2012

Thinking about thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail–that 2,174-mile footpath between Springer Mountain, Georgia, and Maine’s Mt. Katahdin? Great! I highly recommend the journey, which was one of the most soul-satisfying, difficult, wonderful, uncomfortable, inspiring, tiring, exhilarating, challenging, and fun experiences of my life.

The Tennessee Department of Health has been notified of an increase in gastroenteritis (stomach flu) among hikers on the Appalachian Trail this spring, which is likely caused by Norovirus. Please note the following information to help prevent illness and reduce zero days.

    Noroviruses
Noroviruses are a group of viruses (previously known as Norwalk-like viruses) that can affect the stomach and intestines. These viruses can cause people to have gastroenteritis, an inflammation of the stomach and the large intestines.

Increased bear activity leads to food canister rule

    Article Preview

    Written by Marcus Woolf

If you’re heading to the Appalachian Trail this spring, and you plan to camp between Jarrard Gap and Neels Gap, add a bear canister to your gear list.

The USDA Forest Service announced this month that hikers must store their food in a bear canister—rather than just hang food in a bag—if they camp along this five miles of the AT from March 1 though June 1. The storage regulation applies to camping within the Blood Mountain Wilderness Area within a quarter mile of the trail, and also the Blood Mountain Shelter and Woods Hole Shelter.

Don't know how or where to post the following: Our black, partially greying, Standard Poodle, 26" at the shoulder, has been missing since 4/6/2012. We live in the Trail area west of Killington, Vermont, and behind us is forest including the trail up toward Pittsfield, Vermont. He is unfamiliar with that immediate region--for 7 years he has run daily in the woods about 3 miles south over in Chittenden. He has had all his inoculations as of last week, and does NOT CHASE DEER. He is 7 and has taken off only twice before, but never longer than 4 hours. He is extremely intelligent, so if he has not been taken in by someone (we have word out in 5 towns and every conceivable authority) and is still alive, he is far away from home. Please call 802 483-0016 or 345-3874 if you can help.

Two questions for past thru hikers

    1. I am a bit uneasy about heights. Are there any past thru hikers that had height issues and overcame them? I've been told by the time I hit Mt Katahdin
