Jason Parish, 36, of Philadelphia died Sunday March 15, 2015 when a tree felled by strong winds crashed on top of him near the Ed Garvey Shelter near the southern end of the Maryland trail segment. A hiking companion, Michael Sparks, said the tree was dead and had been marked with a pink ribbon, apparently meant to identify it for cutting.
"As park rangers, we are deeply saddened by the tragic loss on Sunday," Settina said. "As the hiking season gets underway, we are taking immediate precautionary action to thoroughly assess and address any potential hazards at AT shelters and campsites."
She said her agency closed the shelters in consultation with the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, Maryland's partners in overseeing the trail segment.
The trail is managed cooperatively by the National Park Service, the U.S. Forest Service and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. ... read more
Folks, I wanted to share this on WB so that hikers out there in the Hot Springs area can be looking for this jerk and get him off the trail. This is what makes ladies fearful. This was shared on a FB page for Appalachian Trail Women Backpackers:
"Hi ladies. I wanted to share a bit of disturbing news from a female 2015 thru-hiker, who was harassed and stalked by a man masquerading as a hiker but who she suspects is homeless, near Laughing Heart Hostel in Hot Springs, NC. According to her, he started following her and telling her that he was a convicted felon and had stabbed someone in the past. Fearing for her safety, she has since gotten off trail temporarily and notified the forest service with a description of this guy. If you are hiking through the area, please be on the look out. The man is about 5'10' ' 160 lbs, strung out on crack, red facial hair and unkempt red hair. He wears non hiker clothes and has a thick southern accent. He goes by the name "Red," but his real name is Daniel E Reece." ... read more
