Steam baking with JetBoil PCS - Molten Chocolate Cake

I've been experimenting with steam baking in a JetBoil PCS. I used a plastic cup 3 inches in diameter and 3 inches tall.

Betty Crocker makes microwaveable deserts called "Warm Delights". They are available at my local Wal-Mart for $1.68 each. This experiment was done with the "Molten Chocolate Cake". Other flavors available are: Hot Fudge Brownie, Molten Caramel Cake, Peanut Butter Fudge Brownie, Fudgy Chocolate Chip Cookie, Cinnamon Swirl Cake, and Lemon Swirl Cake.

Microwave directions: 1. empty cake mix into bowl. stir in 1/4 cup water until well mixed. 2. squeeze fudge pouch 10 times (do not microwave). tear pouch straight across at tear notches. squeeze 8-10 lines of fudge over batter. 3. microwave uncovered on high 1 minute 15 seconds.

Backpacking directions: 1. fill JetBoil PCS with about 3/4 inch of water. 2. empty cake mix into a cup that will fit into the JetBoil PCS. 3. stir in 1/4 cup water until well mixed. 4. squeeze all of the fudge into mix. 5. set JetBoil PCS to lowest possible setting. 6. insert cup into JetBoil PCS. 7. let it steam bake for 20 minutes with lid on.

Note: If water boils into your cup, then your JetBoil setting is too high. You need to lower your JetBoil setting or use a taller cup.

Nutrition Facts: serving size 95g, calories 370 (110 from fat), total fat 12g, saturated fat 5g, trans fat 2g, cholesterol 5mg, sodium 490mg, total carbohydrate 61g, dietary fiber 3g, sugars 41g, protein 6g, calcium 10% of DV, iron 15% of DV.

That rocks!!! Molten lava cake is my hubby's favorite dessert. :) What sort of cup is that you are using??

That would be my guess too.

Silicone should be a safe alternative though. Silicone can be baked and can usually withstand temperatures up to ~400° F

Sarbar (from freezerbag cooking) uses muffin cups with feet in her pot when she bakes. It seems like it would work fine for this but you’d have to make a couple of mini cakes instead of one big one.

If you use a larger pot, the baking set from Packit Gourmet is basically the same idea – it just uses a steamer instead of the feet.

I wonder if my squishy bowls would work. They're silicone, I dont know if they're deep enough though. I only carry one on the trail, I'll have to see if it'll fit in my jetboil! Anyone try this?

They will :)

The reason I use the footed "Silly Feet" ones myself is to keep the cup out of the water so it can steam. On my website I have a whole section devoted on the many forms of "The Fauxbaker" and the ways you can DIY on the trail! :)

Nice idea! Can't wait to try it.

I have nested Ti pots, and have done something similar with muffing mix. Put a few rocks in the bottom of the larger pot and a little water, put the smaller pot on the rocks and bake.
