not sure what you mean by supplies you can scrounge but there are several outfitters all up and down the trail that can help you replace broken or lost gear. as for food you definitely don't need...

i used this most of my hike in '05. when i could find it which was pretty often at the larger grocery stores.

i will occasionally burn paper but never stuff like plastic. i don't carry cans with me but if i did i wouldn't try burning them. its trash it doesn't weight that much.
