Awesome job and congratulations! Now you are the newest source of information for all the rest of us who "plan" on doing the trail!
I have a 40 deg. bag. I want to get a liner (~20 deg.) for the bag to get me through the colder portions. I have a "long" sleeping bag and am looking for a "long" liner. Any suggestions?
That is my plan. Don't have flight finalized yet, but looking for a good deal.
Is there aconveinient place to rent an axe in the area if the snow levels require?
See you out there, I hope to fly in Apri 4/16
How readily is info of closures on the trail. During the hike are there sufficient details (maps?) defining alternate routes. I can somewhat plan for current closures. What about new closures...
Getting back to the snow ammounts (original post topic). With smaller volumes of snow in Sierras, is an ice ax really neccisary? Is it needed at all for a standard hike?
I printed out Half-Miles maps for free (at work)!
I have also ordered Postholer's S. Cal. and Data Book.
I shall compare and decide on my own accord.

I sat down with the Pres., VP and my immediate boss to talk to them, even though literally everybody else in the company knew what I was doing before I talked with the Pres and VP. All is well, and...
Another Buckeye! Have a great hike.
I am probably going to do Cobra through by employer (even though I am "quitting"). It comes out to just over $800 for 6 months.
Akron (area), never stepped foot on the trail hope to step foot on the entire trail starting in 35 days!
I'm no expert but what I am going to do is put everything in clear bags, and put any questionable items (empty feul can, all metal, etc.) at the top of the pack. If they have interest in anything,...
One of the enjoyable things of Amtrak is less restrictions than air travel. I have never bothered with the sleeper car, the seats recline pretty well or you can lay across 2 seats (never been on a...
I'm not starting the same day and you are not arriving in Gainesville at 6:54. I have never ridden on Amtrack and arrived on-time. Never any horrible expreriences, just always running behind.
Have...
BA, I am heading to the hiker hostel on 3/2 and staying the night there. They provide pretty much everything you need and handle all the transportation issues. They even follow your flight/train so...
I have not used one, but from other posts it sounds like they are not that great due to the trail having heavy foilage coverage. I have not yet read a post giving solar chargers a good review for...
I'm amazed at how close this poll is, either I am too sheltered or to ignorant to accept another pronunciation. Either way "I" am hiking the AppalAchian Trail next year. (soon to be this year!)
