We saw a thru hiker Saturday that had a broken wrist from a tumble at a waterfall. Just north of Damascus.
I would need the 20 for at least another month. Do you sleep warm or cold?
No kidding. Made by Arcteryx. Carry a house with one of those.
Unless you're an old woman that's a hundred years old, hiking solo, and 4'6"...you get to be Baggins.
I'll be southbounding my next section next week (4/7-4/11) ending in Damascus VA. Who might I run into?
I've accumulated quite a golf bag of different sleeping bags. For summer I like a roomy lightweight synthetic bag. Marmot Maverick is cheap and practical for summer.
I'm sure Mark Matheny would love to chat online about b&w photography. His trail name is "freezeframe" check out: http://www.thescenicphotographer.com/

Biggest reason I love backpacking is the simplicity. Planning, prep, and logistics is fun and all - but the minute you step on the trail I feel like all the work is done. Getting away from job,...
Park in Damascus and pick up a shuttle to Watauga/321. 40 miles? Easy terrain, not crowded. water where noted.
I took a small stainless steel butter knife and ground off the serrations, then polished it to a smooth blunt finish. Perfect for spreading peanut butter/nutella, very easy and safe to lick clean....

the old "Four Dog" set up, titanium, no moving parts ;)
Extend your trekking poles a bit to give you more assist on the downs and take your time. That's helped my wife a bunch.
go for it !
That's why I still carry a compass (with a mirror). Plus with my sense of direction I've gotten lost in the mall.
AT in the GSMNP. Then you can skip it next spring when things are crazy. Seriously though, it's a good test of what you'll be up against.
I'm sure the math leans toward alcohol stoves, but twig stoves makes you hardcore ;)
Check out Four Dog, I have one of his old stoves. http://fourdog.com/
good to hear, I use a WM highlite as well. My home brew dry clean is to spray a tiny bit of Febreze on a washcloth and throw it in the dryer with all my down stuff. Run it on delicate (low low heat)...
Weary or Leery? (seriously). If you are nervous, my tip would be to have some music or a tiny radio to listen to with ear buds to distract you from the night noises in the middle of the night.
I remember that it took me an hour to go 0.6 mile downhill from the Garfield water source !
Later in the same summer that I did a New Mexico llama trek with my wife, I was on the backpacking staff at the White Mountains High Adventure Base (BSA). The gang there nicknamed me Llama Legs once...
It seemed like every time I went backpacking on the AT with my buddy Walter, we'd get hit with a blizzard or ice storm or some such calamity. One trip he was reading a copy of "The Road" while we...
Although I still use them in Florida, I find my Salomons to be a little too open meshed. The sand filters right into the toe box and my socks. Maybe something highly breathable but not mesh fabric?...
