It's about 1.25 miles off the AT on a sidetrail from the shelter. I've parked there before for section hikes. It does seem that violence usually happens near a road, doesn't it?

Caldwell Fields in basically straight downhill from the Sarver Hollow shelter.
It's pronounced that way by all the Appalachian scholars I've met. All of the academic programs focused on Appalachia are in the south, too, except for one rebel in Dayton, OH.
It was either waxed cotton, oiled cotton, or (most likely) silk. The latter was apparently pitched very tightly, and would shed water, although I doubt if it was actually as waterproof as nylon. I...
I was on my way back from a side trip to a waterfall when a huffing-puffing touron heading in the opposite direction asked, "Is it worth it?"
How could you answer that question for someone else?
I wouldn't say that they are defective. These boots simply do not fit you. City fit is not the same as mountain fit.
- blisters on toes and bruised nails = your feet are likely sliding forward...
I live is SW Virginia and the only months in which I do not backpack are July and August. I gave my snowshoes and most of my real winter clothes to family back in Michigan. There are the occasional...
Regardless of the number of rounds, unloading six from a revolver into a charging bear's chest? Bears charge with their heads bobbing up and down, and if you are on the bad end of it there are...
I've got to tell you that these do not impress me. That looks like rain ripping off the bottom of a storm. When the funnel clouds come down, the thunderheads are stacked up out of sight and the sky...
The hodag was a "bonding legend" used by the lumberjacks in WI. They'd send someone (usually a native american) out into the woods to make bloodcurdling sounds on the nights that new 'jacks arrived,...
I've spent most of my life in the Midwestern plains, where tornado sightings were regular Spring activities, so the US SE seems mild by comparison.
1. Yes, tornadoes suck.
2. You are much more...
This is still a great starting point. I replace #3 with Signalling (a whistle), which is much more important that sun protection unless you are above treeline.
The way I remember the list (which...
I think there is a corollary to #2 - not believing the map and compass. The one time I took a trail the wrong direction for a mile, in the Cranberry Wilderness, I had topo and compass in hand the...
As did I. By your argument, neither Bill Irwin nor Granny Gatewood should have done the AT. They should have spent more time thinking about others' feelings, rather than doing what they wanted with...
So, should people with heart conditions also carry a SPOT/EPIRB or never hike alone again? If they disappeared (which can happen within 100' of the trail), people would come looking for them whether...
I was thinking that same thing when I looked over the map and saw all of the woods roads, atv trails, etc. He hikes like a steam engine, and if he finds anything that looks like a trail heading in...
Ken can see fuzzily to 10-15', but can't see clearly (like to read) beyond a few inches. He loses the trail a lot, cusses and thrashes through the brush until he finds his way back onto the tread,...
I'd been sleeping the same way, but I've recently switched to a BA insulated mummy pad. The improvement in comfort is staggering. My last trip out, I tossed and turned less and woke up once during...
I got out for an overnighter and saw Hard Way at Rice Fields shelter (or Star Gazer shelter, depending on how old you are). He's doing a big section SOBO (Rockfish Gap to Damascus), and he walked...
I've only hiked the one, so I can't compare, but the BFT is beautiful. It makes a loop, too.
It will be hot and sticky in August.
I've parked there overnight. I wrote them a letter (just googled the address, rural box something) with a "pretty please" and enclosed a few bucks for the collection plate. I got a voicemail on my...
A flight of F-18 Hornets out of Norfolk fly over the Radford Army Ammunition Plant every day. They must turn around somewhere over Pearisburg and follow the New River down to the plant, because...
I met Blue and three other thrus on the ridge over Burke's Garden yesterday during a great dayhike. Blue is the only one with whom I stopped to chat, although all of them got Easter candy. :-] ...
I've always used internals, but I want to try an external for the hot weather here (May-September). Campmor has last year's Kelty Trekkers for $79, and now they have one less than they had 10...
