Hi all, call me crazy, but I'm planning to take a family backpacking overnight trip (as a trial run) with my husband and 2 kids. I have an OLD 3/4 length Thermarest that was a hand-me-down and I'd...
It is the short one. 60 inches. Let me know if you're still interested, but I figure that probably won't work for the vast majority of people.
Hey, I have some stuff I'm going to be posting for sale, and decided to quick out what people are looking for. I have a Big Agnes pad that just didn't work for me. (I realized I'm just used to my...
For those of you who knew Why2K, 2010 SOBO thruhiker, his real name is Bradley Johnson, from PA, he passed away this week. Condolensces to his family and the trail community that knew him.
I...
I've hiked up the hill at Port Clinton going N in the snow, and it's been pretty slippery in the snow/ice, that was a couple of years ago though. This recent snow shouldn't be that bad but I'm not...
Has anyone else heard about this? There's a phone booth in the middle of the woods.
I stole this post from a gun forum that my boyfriend reads and he told me to check it out. Here's the thread if...
nope, still cant get on.. it's my work computer.. I have a lot of down time in between calls to read TJ, but I can't go on for hours at a time some days, like today, and yesterday, the site just...
What's going on with Trail Journals? I can never get on, for hours at a time. And then suddenly it'll just be back up. Frustrating.
I like the show, I've watched 2 episodes of it. It's interesting. I like it better than Bear Grylls- not so over the top.. they seem more "real" like Les Stroud.
agreed. I'd rather have extra money than not enough. Plan on eating a lot, especially in town.
just saw this on my aol homepage today Blind Hiker Battles Hardships on Appalachian Trail, Updates Facebook

I would use the pack cover and individual stuff sacks, and zip lock everything in your food bag into seperate little bags. The more waterproofing, the better. But I hiked in 09 and it rained like...
The background on em was on Dogs 101 on Animal planet.. I'm pretty sure they do their homework on researching the dogs.
Anyone have experience with Rhodesian Ridgebacks? I saw them on Animal Planet, and they look like they'd be awesome trail dogs, and just awesome dogs all around. They're really healthy, muscular...
yea, you get used to it. I carried a disposable that I picked up along the way. But only for a couple hundred miles. Then I figured it wasn't worth it.
be warned they get smelly. My feet get a little chilly in them if it's cold outside.
I haven't tried running in them, but i love them other than the stinkiness.
They're not that terrible in comparison. I agree that the rocks just keep on going north.
I've done the rocks in boots and trail runners. Stick with whatever you feel more comfortable in, dont...
hm, i got blisters under my toenails.. i was pretty sure that it was from my toes hitting the front of my shoes on downhills. On my thruhike, i trimmed my nails and drained the blisters and didnt...
seriously, dude.. hitch. it's like 5 minutes up the road. Or if you're super desperate, i will personally come and pick you up.
Hitch. That's the easiest thing to do. END OF THREAD.
like others have said, it's an easy hitch up the road to Kings (I think it's still King's or Weis) in Hamburg. There's also a Cabela's which is a "fun" stop, depending on what you're into.
If it...
I started with a 15 degree down bag, then went with a 45 degree synthetic, then went back to down up north. Go for the lightest, smallest packing bag you can afford, and I'd go with a lower degree bag...
holy crap! Wrath.. I heard about that guy this past year. We didn't actually meet him, but man, we heard some stories! He was hiking the trail to learn swords. Not sword fighting, "to learn swords"....
Mine is really long, if you're willing to get yourself into that. www.trailjournals.com/ashleydillman
It's from 2009 AT. I think it's a good read :) And I'm a little bit of a grammar nut.
there are a lot of threads on this subject if you use the search feature at the top of the forum main page. I don't like to throw a bear line, (fortunately, I hiked with some awesome guys that...
