I have hiked about 450 miles of the trail so far (mainly 50-70 mile sections), so I have some experience, but the bad weather in the east the past 4-5 days - wet, cold, incessant rain - got me...
Thanks so much
Does anyone know a shuttle driver that can take a hiker from 19E up to Watauga Dam or thereabouts? I want to park at the hostel on 19E just down from where the AT crosses 19E.
thanks
The GSMNP is the biggest hassle regarding camping. The shelters are always packed (even with your reservation) and there are no backcountry campsites near the trail. I dont even think you can...
i stayed in a 6 moons tent on Bald Mnt in the non stop rain for 2 days. Miserable, that tent sucks in those conditions. Switched to a REI quarterdome after that
I tried melatonin, it did nothing for me, its too weak
Occasionally I take Lorazopam or Klonopin. I know they are kinda strong but not as wierd as ambien and not as habit forming. Thats the only thing that shuts my mind down when I got a lot going on....
its going to be bad above 4000', i wouldnt want to be hiking in that, you may be holed up at a shelter for a few days
good night to be holed up in Overmountain Shelter
looks like snow tonight all over AT throughout TN and NC, y'all be safe out there
I remember that cold snap. It was -8 in Atlanta. Killed a lot of landscaping plants in the metro area.
I cant imagine camping out that week. Holy crap.
I wouldnt camp on top of the balds this time of year. Just above Overmountain (N) there is a campsite in the woods next to the trail. Its on the climb out of the gap where Overmtn is.
one more thing - if any of you watch Suzy Orman, she says you should work until your 67 or longer to get the max on Social Security. I cant imagine doing that. Why do that to have a bit more money...
I love the AT and dream of hiking it one day. As stated there are choices in life and years ago I got married and have 2 girls in school and a wife that doesnt work (for money). I have a pressure...
I had a Lunar Solo but there was too much condensation on the inside, particularly in a rain storm.
I have since went with a REI Quarterdome, great tent, a bit heavier but has the fly which is...
Hello everyone
Is there a good online trail guide that covers the trail mileages, shelters, water,etc...
I am planning a trip and like to review the guide online. Mainly interested in TN/NC

physical conditioning or equipment wont get you to maine, only your desire and determination, get right with your head and go for it
I have done a number of hikes the first week of october on the AT. Its generally chilli with highs in the low to mid 60's (maybe) - can be in the 50's - and windy. fronts usually bring a cold rain...
Ran a 10K road race with 60K other people - Peachtree RR
in Shining Rock wilderness it was in the low 70's during the day
OK these are great suggestions, I picked up Pisgah map 780. Its much better than the older map I have.
I will settle on a route before Sunday - I am dropping the daughter off at Camp Crestridge...
oh lets see, i was just thru that section in april, to me Hump Mnt or Little Hump would be the best
maybe just S. of Dolls Flats, possibly the valley down from Overmountain, but not sure how big...
Hi guys
I am curious if anyone has hiked in the Shining Rock / Cold Mnt area and if so I am looking for advice on how to do a 3-4 day hike in that area. I was planning on parking at the Daniel...
i did a 70mile section in 2010, i am 53 and by the 6/7th day I was whipped. I also run 20-25 miles per week. I attribute the lack of energy to poor sleep and overly heavy leather boots that I have...
