I haven't tried everything they offer, but I've tried a decent assortment.
The Chili-mac is the best.
The various pasta combinations could use a little extra seasoning, but are otherwise good.
My Zirkel (which is for sale, along with a pad) has kept me plenty warm in those temps.
But the key is having the insulated air core pad underneath you. I feel that's the part that BA is a little...
So, what do these rangers expect you to do if you stop at sundown and you're a few miles from a shelter?
I'm figuring if you're out of sight of the trail, no one will be the wiser, but . . . .
A good, accurate sight for areas along the AT in Western North Carolina is Raysweather.com. In my experience, Raysweather has been much more accurate than Wunderground.com or Weather.com
If you want some more options besides the Hennessy, there are several other manufacturers of hammocks out there.
I couldn't really appreciate the bottom slit-entry on the Hennessy, so I had to get...
This shelter is a short hike from my new home-site. I was up there just a few days ago.
A couple of pics at the shelter:

Just as an update:
My neighbor has been up on the property with some equipment clearing some trees for me (and collecting firewood for himself). And I haven't seen the same signs in the same...
And if you get in touch with Brian, he'll make you just about any custom tarp you can dream up. He's very helpful and accomodating.
If you're a hammock hanger, the Driducks poncho with the JRB mods is a pretty nice piece of dual-use gear.
The screaming incident was late one night, probably 11pm or so.
And we thought we heard the screams coming from two different ridges, where the AT comes near my property. Hard to say for sure...
I've sent an email to see who I should contact.
What I've read on the internet (so it must be true) is that bobcats will usually bury or hide their scat. But mountain lions will leave it out in the open, usually in the middle of a trail or...
I walked down one of the trails where I usually see the most tracks and scat.
But there wasn't much new activity . . . and with the heavy rain last night . . . no tracks.
Even so, I did get some...
Isn't it really just a water heater?
If the water was hot already . . . . why heat it?
Hot Water Heater.
;)
But forget heating water.
Why aren't we seeing solar thermal for...
Yeah, I've read that they're thought to only live in Florida in this region.
And I'll be the first to admit that I'm as far from an expert on this stuff as you can get.
Whatever is leaving these...
I'm becoming more and more certain that I have one (or more) Mountain Lions that frequent my property just off the AT.
I've been seeing tracks that I couldn't quite place. And one night I heard...
My mom and her hubby have honey-bees and provide me with sweet, delicious, local honey.
It's my favorite treat.:D
I haven't hiked the AT this far, but . . . .
I would guess that Erwin, TN might be about 6 days from HotSprings.
It's the biggest town near Curley Maple Gap Shelter (from what I can see).
That...
There's a campground in the middle of town, right on the river.
And the trail goes right through town.
So . . . it might be a nice place to pay for a night or two of campground use so you can...
Yep, last time I was there, some lumber had been "harvested."
My confusion came as I wondered how the harvester was getting the lumber out.
Which parcel does your friend own?
The parcel I'm looking at comes back with US gov't/Forest Service ownership and is approx. 23 acres.
I'm fairly certain that the boys camp falls into the parcel highlighted in blue in the attached picture.
My property is the one labeled as 8739, to the left of the highlighted parcel.
Sgt.Rock,
I talked to one of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy guys at Trailfest.
He wasn't sure . . . but he thinks that the land is gov't-owned now.
And as far as I know . . . there's no...
Here's a GoogleEarth screen capture.
The squiggly red line is the Appalachian Trail centerline (that I downloaded from elsewhere . . . and looks a touch off from the satellite pic, IMO). The road...
