Those who quit so early probably have an idealized version of it in their head, and think it's going to be an easy 2,181 mile walk that will magically cure all their problems. They don't realize that...
Yeah, I plan on doing a nobo once I graduate from college in May! -graduation present to myself.
So, in your opinion what are the best sections of the AT that are typically taken for granted? Personally, I think the Hudson Highlands and parts of CT are overlooked. A lot of people I know think...
Yeah, it really doesn't pay to worry about them. From the couple of encounters I've had with bears, not much happened except them briefly staring at me before running away. They're more scared of us....
Bring some pepper spray...
Probably because there aren't many pay phones left...
I'd have to suggest Columbia Pagora hiking shoes- they're comfortable and give ample traction, without the boot feel.
Personally, I think his goal is a bit unrealistic- I find it extremely difficult to believe that he can accomplish all that in a year. I'll bet that he doesn't finishes. But who knows he could prove...
If you want to actually be able to stay on the trail and not get lost and wander aimlessly in the woods I say stick with the bright white blazes. I really fail to see what the problem is. I mean a...
1. Walden -Thoreau (Absolute favorite)

3. Into the Wild -Krakauer
4. A Sand County Almanac -Leopold
Hey all,
I'm planning a section hike of New Jersey for mid-May once I get out of college. I figure I'll pick up where I left off last summer which is at NJ-94, and then head south to the Delaware...
I wouldn't worry about it too much- there's not much out at that time of the year.
Reeses are good, along with Snickers. --plenty of energy.
If you're able to see the silver underside of leaves (due to wind) rain is generally on it's way. And cows supposedly lay down right before it begins to rain.
Making some serious repairs to the trail I could definitely see, but closing it even for a brief period I cannot.
You'll definitely want to check out the view from atop Anthony's Nose. Shortly after crossing the Bear Mountain Bridge in NY, you'll come to the blue-blazed Camp Smith Trail near a register. Take...
I think about only 10% of hikers do a SoBo thru-hike, probably because you can't start until later in the year. I'd start in Maine though- it would be much more unique in my opinion.
I used to bring one, but after awhile I realized it wasn't necessary (unless it's exceptionally rainy) otherwise it just takes up space.
That's a nice thing to do! Good luck, but enjoy yourself above all- that section's one of the best in NY, especially the part near the Hudson.
Never seen bigfoot, but plenty of bears...
Running into a bear on a mountain in southern NY, and then finding trees with very noticeable claw marks on them located around a nearby shelter --made for quite the night.
