Anyone been to Calf Mountain lately? How's the spring running?
I know we had a pretty dry month so I am not hopeful..
Recently picked up a slightly heavier (and wider, and warmer) sleeping pad to the tune of about 9oz. Also have been toying with the idea of a pillow (clothes sack is marginal at best for me).
Just picked one up in Long (also have a Regular NeoAir). Looking forward to going from an R value of 2.5 to 5.7, and the extra 5" in either direction. I think the 9 oz weight penalty will be worth it...
Just did the same thing, $88 after coupon, dividend, and gift cards (I went with a Long for an extra 5" in either direction).
I'm heading out Monday SOBO from SNP.. You are welcome to join (see post below).
I feel like that section is usually pretty solid for water sources (creeks, etc.) but I'll ask my brother (studlintsean) to check in and see if he has more info. I do know that the Shenandoah River...
I'm heading out on the 21st of this month to hike southbound from Skyland Service Rd (SNP) with the goal of reaching The Captain's Place just outside of Pearisburg, VA. The plan is to be there by the...
Playing with this now for a SOBO hike coming up in a couple of weeks.. but I don't see a SOBO option (everything south of my starting point is grayed out). For now, I have run the trip in a NOBO...
Ahh the Sapphire Inn. I have fond memories of staying there in 2011 (and both Budget Inns if I recall correctly). Congratulations on the sale.
You are all welcome. Glad to give back to the trail. I was actually meaning to put up this picture from 06/10/15 at 55/Linden in VA. We brought water, Gatorade, soda, beer, apples, bananas, oranges,...
I was going to suggest you check out Red Panda's trail journal as well. She does address this issue a couple of times by my recollection. You might gain some ideas for your hike from hers.
First - welcome to WhiteBlaze! This place is an excellent resource for a new (assumed) hiker.
Second - You will probably get varying opinions, including "buy your gear before you buy your pack,"...
If I recall correctly, we did GA in about 1 week without feeling like we were pushing it at all in 2011. It also rained a lot. I can't recall what the first good place to get off the trail is after...
A lot of people stick to shelter-to-shelter walking in that area due to lack of trail legs/being out of shape, etc. What kind of shape are you in?
Hike the AT around Boiling Springs, PA. About as flat as it gets.
I third the starting from Harpers Ferry and heading north. Alternatively, you could pick a spot a little farther north if you were worried about too many hikers in the Harpers Ferry area at that...
I thought I remembered there being some good sites there (a couple years since I have been through there), so I looked it up.. http://www.hikingupward.com/OMH/AnnapolisRockBlackRockCliff/
I'd look for a used Tarptent Contrail/Prolite. 24-26oz and can probably be had for less than $150. Since you don't carry trekking poles, you would need to pick up the single tent pole that Tarptent...
I agree with the Walmart blue foam, or if you are feeling fancy a cut down Thermarest of your choice. I have a ULA Ohm 2.0 and have been thinking about replacing the thin (1/8-1/4") foam with a...
Echo the above.. you will likely never go back to a 'traditional' backpack.
Thanks for our service and sharing the article Damn Yankee. Hoping to run into you one of these days on the trail (I believe my brother(s) have run into you out there already).
I used to be in the stuff sack crowd (one for mid weight layer, one for lightweight layer, both in clothes bag, etc.), but have since converted. I now use one cuben fiber liner with my sleeping bag...
I've used a NeoAir for years and my weight fluctuates around 250 lbs. Never had a problem, never had a leak (knock on wood).
I think Stick used one with a ULA pack (can't recall which one) prior to switching to an Arc Blast (I believe).
