Anything for the Kindle? Or any other recommendations for it?
I went with a freestanding tent so that I could set it up inside the shelters whenever there was enough room. I used a Big Agnes Fly Creek UL 1 and it kept the mice and the bugs off me quite nicely.
I've never been a big fan of backpacking meals like Richmoor, AlpineAire, Mountain House etc. A week of them at a time was about all I could take. But someone suggested I try Enertia Trail Food...
I stayed at Gull Pond Hostel with Detour in early July, 2010. We headed into town for pizzas and I ended up with the better end of that deal. He talked nonstop and I ate nonstop. Never a dull...
Since nobody else has, I'll put in a good word for the INOV-8 Roclite 288's. I've been a runner for 30 years and always used running shoes for backpacking, even with 50+ pound loads. But on my AT...
I used the Big Agnes Fly Creek UL1 on my thru hike last year and it was just the right size. Freestanding and easy to set up but it had plenty of room for gear alongside the sleeping bag. It had a...
There is no reason at all you couldn't do a thru hike in your 50's if you are already in great shape. I thru hiked last year and finished 4 days after I turned 59. I'm a runner and actually found...
I used the Enertia meals my entire 2010 thru hike. They were tasty and I never got tired of them. A plus for me was their one person serving size, an Enertia dinner and a ramen noodle and I was...
I used the ursack minor for my thru hike last year. It held up great the entire time and held all my food between resupplies. A very nice product!
My best trail magic happened 17 miles into a very hot day in lower Virginia. I entered a parking area and saw a hand lettered sign that said "Free burger and massage". A professional masseuse had her...
I used the Roclite 288's on my 2010 thru-hike. They were excellent overall, although a bit light duty for the PA rocks. My feet were never too hot or cold and they gripped wet rocks very well. ...
You might consider trying the Strolling Jim 40 mile ultra in Wartrace, TN on 5/7/11. I've never run that one but it gets good reviews from other runners. It's the 33rd year for the race so they...
Did you mean "Ursack"? I used the Ursack Minor my entire thru hike and it worked great. It won't stand up to a bear but is supposed to be good against mice, raccoons, squirrels etc. It kept the...
It's a possibility that the course was long, rather than gps error. Unlike road races, ultras aren't usually measured accurately. A couple miles too long is certainly common. Early in my ultra...
I recommend AquaMira. It's cheap, effective, lightweight and easy to use. From what I saw, the majority of thru hikers use it.
FWIW.......I wore them a lot, through the winter snows and summer sun. Nothing is more important than protecting my eyes. They also protected me from the greenery and branches when they encroached...
I'll put in another vote for the Montbell bag. I thrash around at night and like some space around my legs to move. I never felt constricted in the Montbell and it sure was comfortable.
I used a Neoair my entire thru hike this year. I didn't have any durability issues, even though I usually stayed in shelters without using anything under it. Most comfortable pad I've ever used.
I haven't tried those packs but I did just finish my thru hike using a GG Nimbus Ozone. It was just the right size, lightweight and really durable.
I recommend the Granite Gear Nimbus Ozone. Lightweight, carries a lot and super durable.
I'll put in a vote for it too. Used it the entire thru hike and it held up great. Lightweight and big enough for all my food.
I had a similar experience with my pull-ups. Didn't affect my hiking and I got back to normal after I returned home and resumed my workout routine. After 20 miles of hiking, there was no motivation...
I'd eat a 6 pack of these for breakfast on the trail when I could get them. Yum! "If the furnace is hot enough, anything will burn."
I'll put in another vote for the Nimbus Ozone. I carried it my entire thru hike this year and it still looked almost brand new. I took it back to the store and showed them how well it held up. ...
