I used an alcohol stove on my thru hike bust was wondering if anyone here burned wood in something like an Emberlit stove all the way? Using available materials is becoming more and more appealing...
Okay, this is good..... I own a classic Hennessey Asym and hate it. Thinking about converting to a Warbonnet XLC with a 20° TQ and UC with a Hammock Gear Cuban Fiber tarp with doors. My confusion...
Mind sharing your setup SB? I'm interested in learning what works best for a typical NOBO thru starting in mid March.
Always carry a deck of cards! You know what they say:
"If you ever get lost in the woods just start playing Solitaire and before long someone will come along and tell you to play the Jack of Hearts...

The Green Mountain Club has a fantastic 7 part YouTube video series on how to use a map and compass. I learned more watching it than reading my book......

Wonder if it will require us having to stand in line?
Let's hope the bureaucrats don't mandate filling out a dozen forms (in triplicate), then having them notorized before proceeding.
I understand. Sometimes it's just good to let a public agency know their "system" isn't working and is frustrating their customers. In the Federal system this is usually best accomplished with a...
No, but a common complaint.
Why not become the squeaky wheel? Contact your Congressman. Even ask an aid to help you. You might be amazed at the results. I have on a couple other issues that...
1+ on the pocket fresnel lens idea. You can find them at Wally World in the Optics Dept. I think they come in a 3 pack for cheap. I usually tear out a page or two of my data book and carry it in a...
The store at Fontana Dam is notoriously unreliable for stocking up on food. When I went through there a fellow hiker bought the last jar of peanut butter and I got the last pack of tuna-nothing else...

Yep, the mini-bus schedule is spotty at best which compounds the "pain in the arse" factor. They only made one run out and back unless they've changed it. Hitchin'? YMMV
It's really pretty simple:

Funny, but the UV (Steripen type) solutions disclaimer touts carrying a backup method like Aqua...
I wouldn't mind hiking Gangnam Style with Hyuna....... Yeehaw!!!!

Another vote for down. Mine never once got wet. Used a trash compactor bag and stuffed it in. Say no to compression sacks-waste of money and pack space.
Harpers Ferry
Only a handful. I preferred the shelter.
Yep, like I mentioned, it's a guideline. Some go lighter, some a little heavier. Tweaking is fun.....
50L equals 3000 cu. in.
Hmmmm, that's what leads to all those 65 lb packs isn't it?
Better to use Winton Porters tried and true gear list as a guideline to avoid buying and carrying all that stuff the REI salesman says...
