No problem. I plan to be out 2-6 October on part of it. Maybe we will run into you if you are out there.

For his SPOT tracking thing.

Can you upload a track that already exists from a non spot GPS?

Typically about 1 to 1.5 feet deep. I do believe an 11 year old would be fine. The first week of October at low elevation you will likely be in the 40's and up high you could see low 30s.

Some in the BMTA has advanced the idea of the Slickrock Loop using the old and new section of the BMT. The person that originated that idea wanted to call it one of the hardest hikes in the area, my...
That is the Rock overlook that is at about 120.3 on my updated 2016 mileages. It is about 0.6 miles from the Coker Creek foot bridge.
That section still confuses me sometimes. Thanks for the tip, I've started working on the 2016 guide.
I love that campsite on Loss Creek. I often think I'll use that one on Towee Creek as it is a short jaunt in from the parking area and would be a great campsite while traveling in a pinch, but I've...
When I was there the logging was limited to near Kimsey Highway. We didn't realize they were logging until we got very close to the road so I hope it sticks to that high ground and doesn't impact...
I've worked on the Towee Creek reroute and it will take a while to finish. When you get to the Reliance section you will be walking along the Hiwasse River and at one point you will cross the parking...
I don't know Walter, I certainly hope not.
When I hiked through there in June Hemp Top was nearly impassable but I went up there anyway. Someone had VERY recently camped there.
Double Springs was running low but I could have got water...
Snow is hard to forecast for shutting you down. My first thru was January - February and I got lots of cold weather and even rain, but conditions aren't always right for snow. Even when you do get...
You should be free of snow until probably February

I've always hear the rattler called the gentlemen of snakes because he at least lets you know he is there so you can stay away. Last month I saw this big sucker going south from Toonawee Mountain.
I got stung on two different occasions on my last hike in June. I also saw a sure enough hornets nest on the climb out of Bryson Gap.
A friend of mine actually had pictures of a mamma and her cub from a few days ago, but it was from Cades Cove road. He didn't see a single on on the trail either.
As one who does maintenance I would always accept any help from hikers keeping the tread way clear, so worries about clearing some. However a machete is the preferred tool for clearing totally...
I was just out there. That section is fine. Leave the machete

I hike around here often that time of year and there is nothing different about the bear danger then from what there is right now. I wouldn't carry bear spray.

Where on the BMT are you going

I agree. Bear danger is overblown.

Only one time have I ever felt truly threatened and that was at campsite 88 by a young adult bear I think was a male. I did as that article stated and started yelling and waving my arms around when...
