Some motels are cheaper, and better than the hostels. I stayed at a hiker hostel in Pearisburg, VA. It was $20/bed. In one crowded room full of twenty hikers. 2 toilets, 2 showers (better then...

2017 will be my second through hike of the AT. I did a sobo in 2014. Of you need Antoine to geek out with gear, planning, details, advice, etc feel free to contact me.
If they are all available, I'll take the mitts.
Good midweight baselayer, raincoat. If it's really cold a super thin, warm, down puffy (love my ghost whisperer) (note-not for hiking in though unless it's crazy cold (-0°f)).
Diva cup is the way to go. I also use an liner pad made by newmoonpads.com. I carried 2 pads and the diva cup, totaling 3oz for all, and used it exclusively on my sobo hike.
I thru hiked the AT with a Lightheart Solo. I didn't have any issues fitting my pack in my tent at night.
Sugar Cookie! (limited edition around the holidays). Then Raspberry or Cherry frosted. S'mores holds up *best* in the pack. Chocolate frosted is always good. Oreo one is disappointing.
I used 2 elemental new moon pads (newmoonpads.com) as liners with diva cup on my through hike last year. I switched to this combo probably 4 years ago now, and haven't had any issues. On the trail,...
If you want to stay dry, stay away from Red Ledge.
Went sobo last year. I loved the southern appalachians. But I'm from Virginia, so those mountains felt like home. They were their own type of challenge. Their own barren branched beauty. Smokies...

When I hiked that stretch last year going south, it was really confusing &I last the trail awhile after crossing the bridge & Hudson. Wandered around the park, looking for trail & getting...
I've been responsible for a deaf seventeen year old, working wilderness therapy. We make the kids call a number when out of sight watering a bush, but always made a tarped off area in camp for that...
Most I saw on my sobo hike last year in November was ten. Three of us were sobo's, the other seven weekenders. Kept the fire going all night & it was 10° inside when we got up in the morning. Cold...
I got a pair of XR Missions last year at the Cabela's in PA. I love them, I really like the wide heel base, which makes my foot more stable & I stumble & fall way less. They fit my feet really well,...
Only thing I lost was a buff. And that's only because I forgot about I'd washed it, so forgot to look for it in the laundry jumble. Can take a few minutes to get everybody's socks straightened out, ...
Try Salamon's. I love the XR Mission's.
I knew a guy that named his Shirley. As in "Shirley you can get lighter!", & "Shirley, you don't need to bring that!?!?!"
From Roan Highlands south the weather was an issue. Not all the time, for sure (plenty of tshirt days). But end of October- Nov 24. My 20° down & 40° synthetic actually weighed the same (2 lbs 3 oz)....
When are you starting, and how fast do you plan on hiking ?
I hiked sobo last year. June 7 - Nov 24th. I started with a Marmot 20° bag. There was a few mights in Maine I was glad I hadn't brought my...
Double Spring in the Smokies this November. It was cold that night, but even colder the next.
I've been using a divacup & light weight reusable liner pads from new moon pads. Have used this combo for two years now. 1300 miles into my sobo thru it's worked well on the trail. Two pads & divacup...
Couple of us sobo's are planning on tenting tomorrow night at campsite on Humpback. Awol lists a spring climbing up it (book's in my pack & not handy, don't remember mileage). Anybody know if it's...
I've got the Snowpeak 700 Mug/Pot. I can cook a rice side or a box of Mac & cheese in it no problems (well sometimes a little over boil of pasta water, but I'm working on just the perfect ratio). I...
Campmor will have some on sale, and they get seconds as well. I paid $70 for a second NeoAir Trekker from them. (only thing "wrong" is some dye flaw in the fabric, no real flaws).
