I just got a pair of ULA Rain Mitts, and I've got a question I had when I got a pair of gloves months back. What are the point of the hooks on the mitts/gloves? I've seen video of mountaineers...

Ah..all I needed was a bit more patience? Thanks guys.
I never carry matches, so I'll see if I can find a slow burning piece of tinder similar to pinestraw to keep the flame away from my fingers....
Ok, the most simple and absurd: how do you light this stuff? I bought a box to use as backup for my wood burning stove, and can't seem to get it lit. I assumed it would be a simple affair: lay...
well, you have to worry about closed cell foam pads going flat, but not due to deflating. Instead you'll probably be replacing them every few hundred miles if you like to stay comfortable. Having...
I just stumbled upon Nimblewill Nomad's Oddyssey 2008, the PCT. He's starting around April 21st. Hopefully I, and others hiking this year, will meet this guy. He seems like a pretty interesting...
Death Valley would be fun and is a place I"d love to see, and soon. Also the coast of California is very beautiful. You could do a nice hike for a few days on the Lost Coast Trail which is very...
well, what a strange weekend. I started around 2 pm after doing some car repairs. I began at the Blood Mtn trailhead, which turns out to be a fine spot to leave your car for 3 days. I hiked the .6...
I will be hiking this loop, finally, starting tomorrow around 11 am. I plan to start and end at the parking Bryce Reece Memorial parking lot near Blood Mtn. 3.5 days later I hope to end it all with...
You could hike the last section of the John Muir Trail, west to the Valley after the PCT and JMT seperate and the PCT goes the other way. Then I'm guessing a quick hitch/bus ride would get you back...
Don't forget about the new guide (probably better than the others) at www.pctatlas.com . The layout looks superior to the data book and trail guide done by wilderness press, but I still plan on...
Thank you very much Khanti for the detailed post-trip report. This is making me look forward to my hike toward the end of April even more. I'm going to look into getting the map now just to figure...
I'd be a little bit more excited if I weren't all wrapped up in nutritional planning. Looking at granola and calorie-rich cracker recipes. Once all of this planning is done, man I'll be pumped. It...
You could always just hike to the river and back in one day, if you are in good shape and smart about staying hydrated.
Thanks for all of this information from someone with connections to the trail. I love the state of Arizona and would love to hike this trail someday. It's really cool to see that the trail...
Is the guidebook and/or map really necessary for a thru-hike? I'm a fan of maps as much as the next guy, but if the trail is well blazed, I'd rather just take the chance. No need for a lecture on...
Can anyone share any information on how much traffic is going into and out of Oconee on that road? I ask because I'm thinking about hitchhiking to get to the Table Rock and start a thru-hike,...
Am I the only one looking forward to the desert portions of the trail as much as if not more than the High Sierra?
I have thought about switching to thinner socks, but hate the lack of durability. I've worn liner socks alone, and they didn't last any longer than a week. Maybe liner socks over liner socks?
I agree with Sly. I'd say try to find some shoes that fit you and seem to have lots of breathable mesh. The Inov-8s work for me, but you may find some other normal running shoes that are just as...
I also wonder about this. I've seen posts on PCT-L saying that Mac-N-Cheese can cost $2.50 in many places. Is this just at the obviously high priced resorts and not in the towns? My bet is that...
Yogi isn't trying to turn you back to boots, but she argues that you should wear 'normal' running shoes because they are lighter and more breathable than trail runners. So, 'normal' shoes have less...
I'm starting the hike on Thursday, planning to camp at Lake Morena that night, then leaving the next morning before the kickoff happens. However. I'll be starting with about 4 other people...
You should never have to camp on top of snow on the PCT. Either brush the snow away from your campsite, or just go further down the mountain to lower elevations where you can easily find dry pockets...
Looks like it's around normal to me too. Apparently it's a high snow year up in the Cascades though. Haven't seen any graphs for that part of the trail though... Plus I'm not SOBO, so I don't...
Another thought: does anyone have a link that shows a good map of all the trails in this area? it'd be nice to see where they all intersect and learn the trip possibilities that way.
