I believe I passed you Saturday. A buddy and I were heading NB to the state line for an overnight. I read a bit of this thread. Good luck.
I can speak for part of that - I hiked from Unicoi to Dicks Creek this past Sat-Sun (Oct 18-19).
- The stream at .6 in was kicking, but if you're starting at Unicoi like me, theres no need to top...
I shuttled a pal yesterday and I saw the blue compact and white truck mentioned above. I figured I'd search and see if they had been mentioned here. Pretty decent vehicles to abandon if thats...
The hike from Hawk to Justus Creek can be a long one if you've started at Springer. First half of day = cake. Second half of day = a couple of serious climbs. Sure the guide says thats a 13.6mi day,...
They were probably pretty sloppy with food, both cooking, eating and storage. Hopefully they got moused pretty good.
Btw- my buddy an i walked around them. There was a day hiker w a dog behind us that requested I move them off the trail.
Almost stepped on this first one descending Blood mountain into Neels Gap yesterday right afternoon. These 2 were way up the hill - above 3500', it was 65 degrees and overcast. They were moving slow,...
I could care less if a shelter has some graffiti. At least Rifle used some effort carving it and didn't just use a sharpie.
Academy sports sells their private label rip off of UA - called BCG. Very happy with them and I'm really picky about my drawers riding up and heating up. $10/pr.
A map of the USFS roads would be handy for the first 15mi, but Woody Gap (20mi) Neels Gap, Hogpen Gap, Unicoi Gap are pretty logical meeting points that are easy to get to.
Second reply to this thread, but you got me thinking. I should go a little deeper.
Last March I did the loop from Lake Winfield Scott and went up Blood.
When I got up top, there were about 40...
FootSmart.com has extended sizes.
It's personal preference. I used a staff for 30 years. In the last year I have transitioned to 2 very light home made bamboo poles.
I'm much faster with 2 poles. It just seems more natural, more...
Good stuff SB. Going alone always heightens the experience for me too. Thanks for sharing. That's a great loop.
I'm just a weekend warrior so take this w a grain of salt: One thing I didn't see as I was scanning these replies was putting the sleeping pad (if you use a thermarest or sim) in first and...
Lots if good advice here. Also: There's a good bit of distance between Hawk Mtn Shelter an the next water source- Justus Creek. Take that into account when planning camping spots.

Let me know I'd that doesn't work out.
Are you looking for a ride from Neels to Springer?
Preachers Rock 1mi in is impressive, but Blood is the best- from up as mentioned above, as well as views as you begin the decent down the rock to the weathered treeline. Water up at Lance Creek 3mi....
60 is Woody Gap. Appx 9 mi to summit Blood.
I'd suggest camping at Windfield Scott. From your camp site, do the Jarrard gap hike up to the AT, then follow the at to where it meets Slaughter Creek...
Good ending. Those rescuers have a friend for life.
I kinda wanted the bear to attack her because she sounds like my ex mother in law.
I've used it a lot over the years, never have seen an issue. It is typically quite busy. Usual advice: Stow all valuables. Another option, park at Vogel State Park a couple of miles up the road from...
The leaves were 80% out on 4/20.
My wife and I did a bit of that section on 4/20-21 this year. We live 25 mi south of there too. I wore my zip off pants and an underarmor t. My wife- the same. We had a fleeces packed, but only used...
