I have seen lots of reports of this one from Olympus do exactly what you want while turning out some fantastic shots. Price is higher (a bit higher actually) but is a much better quality camera.

I am curious as to what piece (or pieces) of gear you send home almost immediately as you knew you would not use it or it was just to big/heavy for the hike?
