I am Hypothyroid and thru-hiked the AT in 2010 and the PCT in 2011 with no problems. Granted I still took my meds everyday. I noticed a problem accomplishing even the simpliest tasks when I was...
I used the Osprey Exos 58 for the last 600 or 700 miles of the PCT 2011 thru hike and loved it. It's the lightest weight pack you can find at REI. They have a **** selection for women trying to go...
hilarious. thanks for posting.
haha. i guess i couldn't wait. i just finished my 2011 PCT thru hike two weeks ago. CDT 2013
doing twenty mile days in the dessert is easier than you think. you should have no problem pulling twenty miles days within a week of starting the trail.
I totally agree with handlebar. I just finished thru hiking the PCT a couple weeks ago and I carried a fifteen degree bag the whole way. Most of the hikers that I hiked with did the same. :)
yes, I'll be there! :)
I swear by the 1 liter Vitamin water bottles. I like that it's not as fat as the Gatorade bottle and can slide into my side pockets but it still has a wide drinking mouth.
I totally feel ya man! I felt/feel the same way before I started trail and after I finished it whenever I get back to the "main stream life". I say go for it! If not the AT, some other wild...
I working in Northern AZ too and hiking the PCT this year, what a small world.
Good luck on your thru! Maybe I'll see you out there!

Thank you GutHooK and BrianLe! I really appreciate the help even though I'm sure you have answered questions like this multiple times. I run into the same things answering AT questions over on the...
So, I ordered the wilderness press set of guidebooks and was totally disappointed once I started reading them. They don't seem to give very impertinent information and the maps are pretty terrible. ...
I am planning to start the trail after the kick off weekend. See you out there!
I too am thinking about a PCT hike this year and I am looking to do it as CHEAP as possible. Are maps really necessary? I bought maps for my AT hike last year and didn't need them at all. I need...
maybe you should include an email address so that hikers can email you. ;)
100-mile wilderness in Maine had the worst mice.
^sidenote: It took me 6 months and 1 week to complete the trail.
I don't know about you guys, but as I recall, Georgia kicked my butt. Don't underestimate the hills down south.
As for a time frame, the best lesson I learned on trail was to not plan. Just go...
i would avoid any harsh chemicals so that you don't mess up the sealant on the fabric of the tent. i agreed about baking soda and warm water. just set the tent up and wipe it out.
you should repost this in the PCT forum.
great articles! It definitely sheds some light on what I have been experiencing in the last 4 months since I finished my thru. I guess I am going to hit weight training pretty hard from now on and...
I'm sure some hikers will come along to back me up on this one. You need sunblock in the beginning because there are no leaves on the trees and you will definitely get burned in the first couple of...
These are my suggestions. Hope it helps. Happy Trails!
I lost 15 pounds on trail and have gained about 10 back since I finished my thru 4 months ago. It's a little frustrating. I eat pretty healthy and in small portions, but if I don't get out running...
