Whoops... I totally missed the NET part of the question. Totally my mistake there. Good catch, thanks! Your advice is definitely more on topic than what I posted, lol. I still need to get back to...
Good looking list! Your packed clothes weight will go down a lot come summertime. And my guess is you'll ditch the rain pants come warmer weather as well. I only really used rain pants when it was...
I'd say the Riga Plateau section of the trail might be the most scenic... maybe CT41 at Salisbury, CT over Bear Mountain and Riga, into MA through Sage's Ravine, to US7 at Sheffield, MA. Give or take...
I don't use a footprint with my Fly Creek, but were I to I'd just go to a local hardware store and buy the thinnest plastic painters drop cloth I could find... I think Frost King makes a 1.5 mil that...
My feet didn't change size at all, and this was back in the late 90's when packs were significantly heavier.
In other words, everyone is different. My guess, and it's only a guess... if you're...
I threw out my back about 15 years ago, and have had problems with it ever since. The NeoAir, or a hammock, has worked well for me.
This. It's all words.
Bourbon. Actually, exhaustion, and then bourbon.
That will be enough. It's only getting down into the mid-50's at sea level, so up at elevation at worst it should only get down into the mid-to-high-40's. Which is frankly quite nice. Bugs are...
Aw man, I hope another hiker gets it. I loved that place back in '98.
I went three days in Maine without seeing another single living human (excluding a seaplane that I saw land on the far side of a lake I was hiking along, maybe 1/4 mile away). Which I was frankly...
Definitely this. One of the best shelters on the AT. Well worth the side trail to get there (and it's an easy side trail, flat along the ridge for the most part).
Congratulations! I am jealous of your newly acquired free time for hiking. :)
Haha. Yep, it'll happen if water gets in there in any quantity. The worst time I had, I had set up my tarp perfectly, sides against the wind and stakes as low as possible, ends battened down tight. ...
I've got wet in hammocks before, even with a perfect tarp pitch. Sometimes, it just doesn't matter what you do.
Hahaha... you're totally crazy. But it's a **GOOD** type of crazy. :) And yeah, it's overwhelming and a bit scary, but once you're out there you'll fall right into it and it won't be overwhelming...
It doesn't matter either way, but I see no reason not to do it. Just more time you get to spend in the woods. :) That said, if you don't want to do it, no worries there either.
I always loved the book. Never understood the hate.
I would love to do some hiking over there. The trail that interested me was the Southern Upland Way, a coast to coast trail in Scotland. Looked outstanding.
I believe that you should always bring some sort of shelter. That said, it does not need to be a tent or anything fancy at all. Just some sort of emergency shelter that will keep you warm and dry...
I forgot how much the Mt Rogers area looks like the northern part of the trail. Definitely one of my more favorite parts of the trail in the south.
You certainly don't need them unless otherwise instructed by a doctor. I love using them on downhills, uphills they can help a little bit, though on flat ground I feel the actually get in the way and...
On the PCT in the desert I used an old cotton/poly white work shirt. Worked great out there. On the AT... I'd probably stick to synthetic only. Humidity is too high, a cotton shirt would never dry.
I second this shelter. The view is off the charts. I spent a night here once, clear night at the shelter, but you could see Manhattan in the distance down the river, and there was a lightning storm...
I'd suggest seeing a podiatrist and inquiring about custom fit orthotic insoles. That's what I did when I had PF, and it helped tons.
That said, there did come a point when the orthotics actually...
