I did use the Body Glide anti chafe but also recommend the hard to find Body Glide liquefied powder. Use it as an anti chafe on your shoulders, groin area and your feet to avoid blisters.
Marmot windshirt, light weight and blocks the wind. I had a full zip model with one upper pocket. I bought a patagonia R-2 for the thru but went with the lighter windshirt.

I have the Black Diamond Alpine cork poles. I do recommend them as I saw many people having issue with the twist lock poles. I broke my Alpine corks coming down Mt. Moosilauke. I went to an...

I had a merino wool base layer, mid layer was a Marmot wind shirt , with a ArcTeryx shell for wet and cold days. I had a down jacket worn only in camp and slept in the jacket only on two really cold...
I rarely planned more than 3-5 days at a time given the distances between re-supplies. I enjoyed the planning aspect sharing information with NOBOs SOBOs and day trippers. Your jitters will leave...
I have to say I was well informed as a hiker by reading Whiteblaze. I knew exactly what to expect from reading forums here, Trail Journals at TrailJournals.com and using AWOLs guide. If your new to...
I absolutely would like to go back to Maine again, as towards the end we were running on empty and needed to get to Mt Katahdin before October 15th. Hiking through Maine there was a beauty due to...
Had to share a shelter with a snoring old man with a wet dog that clicked his teeth all night. I have nothing against dogs on the trail but out of respect I think a dog owner should have a tent. I...
It took me 6 months and I planned for 5-6 months. I took it slow and easy during the first half of my journey taking 30 zeroes. At least 10 of those zeroes were for illness and injury. ...
Amen, Never seems to make a difference, even when I very politely told fellow hikers go ahead of me hoping they'd clear the webs.
amen to the above. Whenever I could I got to town and ate big on the protein (steak) with vegetables and salads. Many times I carried a deli sandwich out of town for my evening meal with a soda.
Hello all, I have read many posts for the last 3 years in preparation for my thru hike which I did accomplish last year. I found lots of great advice here and by reading TrailJournals.com. By...
I agree with the above. I am 59 and did a thru last year 2013. I saw many young uns on the trail early on with over use injuries, knees, ankle, blisters, and the like. Some of them got off the...
Snakes, well its not irrational. Eastern Timber rattlers, water moccasins and Copper Heads were some of the snakes I encountered during last years thru hike. Photo by "Babyface" somewhere in PA on...
Leukotape for sure! Waterproof stays where you put it and has many other uses.
I have the WM as well and did the same. I am a large guy too, so if you can get a little more shoulder room than the Aplinlite it may be worth it.
