living up here close to the Whites is awesome! We're about an hour to two hours from them, depending on the area you want to go to, but I'd love to live even closer....some day maybe I'll have cabin...
school systems in Manch-vegas can't be any worse than the ones in dirty NY :P
(not that I have any clue though to where in NY you are.. just couldnt resist posting...)
The maine woods are some of the thickest I've ever seen anywhere on the east coast...super dense and thick.
I know it's a tragic event, and I am also awestruck at how many lives it truly has touched. I think about her everyday. I was out hiking in part of the area she was last seen just this past weekend....
How about when people start rumors about a current hiker having a mental illness? It's happened on this thread...just seems to have crossed that line where it should have been stopped quite a ways...
Honestly, I second this. I understand everyone wanting to know what's going on, but all the speculation and accusations have gotten out of hand. I agree this thread should be closed down.
Oopss, My Bad :D
No, .com and Queen are female southbound hikers. I believe "the boys" that were referred to are Crunchmaster and his friends that were also hiking southbound who believed they had seen Gerry near the...
What did the AMC get grandfathered into? It's been around long before the ATC (AMC founded in 1876). Matter of fact, looking at the AMC history, it helped to form the ATC in 1925.
If anyone is setting out for any extended time on the Trail, then they should be doing a little research about the Trail in the area they are hiking. If they don't and then they complain about "not...
Can I ask you when the last time was that you were hiking on the AT up here in the Whites? I've been on quite a bit of it this year and haven't seen any hand-marked with sharpie on signs. Matter of...
I'd also second what Guthook said and grab the maps he mentions. Always better to have them and not need them, than run into some situation where you do need them and not have them, especially up...
Galehead is very close to the AT, actually a good stopping point for a break, snacks if you want, etc. Maybe you meant Greenleaf, which is about a mile down off the summit of Lafayette?
seriously.....
Sheeesh, I'm being reminded of why I don't come on here much anymore....
It's interesting to me that some of the more negative comments about the workings of the AMC and about how the ATC should...
So the ATC should take over management in The Whites even thought the AT only uses a small portion of trails that are actually in The Whites? no way...there's far more trails and areas to maintain,...
From a post about 20 minutes ago on the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife page:
SEARCH UPDATE FOR GERALDINE LARGAY August 4, 2013: At the conclusion of today’s search efforts...
Here's the article which I forgot to add: http://www.onlinesentinel.com/news/Wardens-change-tactics-in-search-for-missing-Appalachian-Trail-hiker.html
Here's another article about info from the press conference earlier and it gives a good description between what a "hasty" search is and a grid search, which they were conducting today. Grid searches...
LOVE IT!! Best analogy and way to convey it ever!
It's a good thing that your dog hasn't experienced any problems with people which led him to become a little reactive and growl at others. We're trying to train Grayson to not go up to every person...
Lol! got it on my first thru-hike in '99 down in Georgia....got so fed up one night with the amount of mice using my pack as jungle gym while it was hanging on the shelter wall above me that i took...
We do move him off the trail and to the side, have him sit and we always have a hand on his harness so he cannot get away. Even with this approach you'd be surprised at how many people STILL walk...
A big thing both Chaco and I have learned from Grayson's trainer is that you never ever put your face in a dog's face, especially a dog you don't know and that doesn't know you. It sounds like common...
