Thanks for sharing your experience - I hope both of us are able to do a full thru some day!
I think you guys might have sold me! I've been looking forward to staying at the hiker hostel, doing the approach trail, seeing the plaque on Springer, etc. I think if I just jumped in and went...
I've been dreaming about an AT hike for a long time, but it's looking like an end-to-end thru might just not be in the cards. How best to use this summer, then? I have a fair amount of experience...
I'm planning on an early March start... I think my plan is to use the Sawyer as normal if temps are above 32F, and just drink untreated/unfiltered water if it's colder than that. Yolo?
Just want to point out... Even with 32F water coming from a running source, as soon as you bring that out into the 10F atmosphere and increase the "surface area" of the water by squeezing it through...
Hey guys, I just wanted to share something I'm excited about!
I had an LL Bean gift card and used it to purchase their Polartec Microgrid Fleece:

Hey Gnome, I'm hoping to start around the same time as you, maybe a little earlier. What are your thoughts on sleep clothes and microspikes for an early/mid-March start? I'm leaning towards at...
I've got a pair of them in XXL, only used once and then I realized winter hiking is miserable... Would part with them for $25 + shipping if you're interested?
Maybe the Arizona Trail? :sun:p
Thanks for confirming my fears! I guess I'll look into the Colorado Trail, JMT, etc instead.
Hi all,
I need to be off the trail by mid-July-ish due to school. I figure I could start early/mid March and do the trail in 4 months. I think I can handle it in terms of the weather and the...
I suppose that, as with everything in life, there has to be some balance and middle ground, and everyone has to figure out what's right for them. I'm not going to go spend my life savings in a week...
+1 to both of you...
I don't believe in delayed gratification. 100 people die in car accidents on their way to work each day, and probably 1000 more get into accidents that leave them with brain...

Next time buy a cheaper car, jeebus. You probably end up paying like $20k for a new car like that? That's like 1.5 years worth of living expenses down the drain. Think about it this...
You should probably consider all advice, solicited or otherwise. You will learn faster that way.
Meh, nothing new or surprising.
I'm eating some baby carrots right now :D
Wow, that seems like the winner to me. ~1oz, 600 on one side 1800 on the other, only $20, supposedly last a lot longer. I've never used diamond sharpening stones like these but they seem awesome. ...
Ahhh, "UL knife sharpener" made me think you meant to carry it on the trail!
Those are pretty cool, but I dunno... Won't they only work for one specific grind? If your knife isn't just the...
For a hike on the AT, PCT, etc, why not use a bounce box and just bounce it along? I can't imagine really needing to sharpen a knife more than once every 1-2 weeks, even if using a wood stove. I...

If the seams are taped, there should be no need to do any additional seam sealing. In fact, applying seam sealer would be bad because it would add weight and not accomplish anything...
I was about to say that. Technically, I think you're both being selfish.
My brain saw "Get a falcon free!" And I thought this was going to be another "live off the land while hiking" thread
I was 100% a bladder person all the way until I got a ULA pack with easy-to-reach side pockets. I think if you go the bottles route, it's very important to be able to reach them while walking. I...
It's cool, I can put it on my lap, no problem.
