I used the shelter twice in 2001 and again in 2016. It was a wreck in need of repair. I am surprised it has not fallen down or caught on fire. It' time to remove it before it does.
As a past thru-hiker I would recommend the following: Don't be concerned about starting alone. There will be plenty of folks starting at the same time you start. Be a little outgoing and start to...
Started from Springer ,NOBO, April 17. Little cold weather to cope with. Most shelters were not crowded. Little bug problems. Flipped to Maine from Doncannon and summited Katahadin on July 22. ...
Thanks for keeping White Blaze going all these years. I have been a member for all those 20 years. Some posts but always reading others.
One thing to remember when choosing a bag for a long term, thru-hike, is once you get a down bag wet it is very hard to dry and the ratting goes way down. On a thru-hike it can become a problem to...
during my 2001 thru i met a couple of guys hiking together. They only ate corn pasta and caned tuna fish. One of them, trail name, tuna made it all the way. His partner left the trail somewhere...
No regrets. I just wish that I could do it again.
I took a pair of gaiters on my thru. They came up just under my knee. I probably used them 25% of the time. Wore them on heavy rain days, on cold days and when their was a Lot of poison I’vy near...
I still have a Kelty 1970s frame pack that I used on my thru in 2001.
In my estimation too much day to day planning can spoil your hike.
Sounds to me that your dog is uncontrollable. You should not bring him on the AT.
It has to be that folks are using their phones to get answers
I remember when new posts were more than 15-20.

Greetings A.T. Trail Friends,
I am an A.T. Section Hiker seeking a hiking buddy to hike the A.T. in MASS starting in mid-July....
Just finished rereading all the posts in this blog.
I am glad to have come to the conclusion that most hikers who visit the cabin leave happy and pleased with their stay.
It is also a pleasurer,...
I have been a Caretaker at Upper Goose Pond for 17 seasons. 75% of hikers stopping at the cabin a first question is; " can I charge my phone?" This leads me to believe that a charged phone is the...
After reading all the subject posts I have come to the following conclusion: in the end you would enjoy your hike much more if you did’t take your phone. Take a cheap camera, to take photos. You...
Knowing the reputation some thru-hikers leave behind, they were looking after their interests.
If you think you should take a chair, by all means take one. When you get to Neels Gap, you can send it home.
Most AT shelters do not have water pumps. I can only remember 6-7 shelters with a pump. Mostly in PA, CT, MA.
Most thru-hikers will loose some toe nails before they finish. One reason is your feet get larger as you hike making your shoes tight in the toe area. As you hike, with a heavy pack going downhill...
Their is nothing better than a hot meal after hiking a long cold or wet day.
[QUOTE=Lugnut;780790]Down by the river (bay). Matt Foley would have been proud. Happy 40th Birthday. :banana
Happy birthday to a great friend of the AT hiking community for the last 20 years.
A certificate for completing the AT means little. It has become something that is given out to almost anyone who applies for one, with no proof at all if they did the hike or not.
I thru-hiked in...
It sure feels good to have clean sleeping clothes. A little wash up and clean clothes sure helped me to sleep better.
