I have used esbits exclusively for about 20 years including the JMT ...no issues.
NOBO is fine...except that fanny kicker of climbing Whitney with a full pack first thing....but if you don't get a Whitney permit...do it anyway and enjoy.
ditto above...once you get into higher elevations you will be fine. 60-70s during the day and 30-40 at night
Ditto end of Aug beg of Sept
The first time I did it I think I only hiked 7 or 8 mpd cuz of navigation. The second time was much faster...
Yea thats a great one. I remember when all we had was videos and not DVDs and no youtube and I bought everything I could get my hands on. Now...youtube has tons of great videos and I really...
Ah fond memories....thanks for posting!!!!
We had not a lot of stuff that took a bunch of room and repackaged everything. Tortillas with peanut butter and honey. Deyhdrated dinners. Granola or oatmeal breakfasts. The usual snacks. But no...
Sounds like a lot of work. I carried 12 days from MTR as my last resupply and it was totally fine...
Looks good. I've gone stoveless on short hikes...never on long hikes. I use esbits which don't way anything...but I am tempted to go stoveless altogether...
3 lbs tho...ouch. You can rent the bearikade from the manufacturer...
The bearikade is approved...been using one for years in Yosemite and the high sierra and never had a ranger tell me I couldn't use it.

I like maps so I can see what peaks etc I am looking at in the distance just for fun...:)
Hey ChinMusic...I think August is the sweet spot. The skeeters are mostly gone, the wildflowers are still there. Creeks are still running and the days are long still and warm. But...having said...
Lots of high mountain lakes....please please please leave the soap at home tho...:) Dee
I didn't look closely at all your mileages, but they look fine. I did notice you gave 10 miles from Guitar Lake to top of Whitney...but I think it's only about 2 miles. Looks good overall tho. Enjoy!
Ditto the small folding brush with the mirror inside....
Wait you are wearing zipoffs and also bringing gym shorts? Lose 6.4 oz there...
Also you are wearing dri fit T and also carrying another one? Lose another 6+ oz...:)
Thanks! Good one!
Cheapest trekking poles would be to pick up some old ski poles at a garage sale or Goodwill or something...
Chinmusic...Late Aug to early Sept is the best time to hike it! It might continue to be a low snow year, but I would still hike then, there are lots of water sources along the way. As far as...
The way the weather is looking so far July would be fine....
I watched it on Amazon...it was called "mile....mile and a half" ...or something close to that. I really liked it!
Westen Mountaineering...:)
