Wow. Is she married? Haha...
Also, stories of bugs in ME are exaggerated, particularly in recent years. Mosquitoes have been way worse than black flies.
You can most certainly go either way. If you think you can avg. 16-20 miles a day and you want to be done by mid-September, go for a NOBO. If you want to take a more leisurely pace, start mid-June...
Oops. The same pg. answers my question.
"Jennifer Pharr-Davis holds the fastest time for a self-supported trip on the Long Trail, and also the fastest time by a female, 7d15h40m, in August 2007."
A quick Google search indicates that the current speed record was set in September, at 4d12h46m (supported). But I'm wondering if there is an unsupported speed record posted anywhere.

I second Tin Man on the Lipton pasta stuff. Very easy to prepare, good tasting, and cheap.
Hi just a word of caution on mail drops. I found them very inconvenient. It seemed that every time I wanted to go to the PO, I was arriving at a time when it was closed for the weekend. It really...
Fill up a small bottle with household bleach and take a small dropper. Use 2 drops per liter. You won't notice the taste and it's safe. So much easier than a pump and cheaper than purification...
bleach! 2 drops per liter...oh someone already said that. that's all i used for my whole thruhike last year.
I agree, also many people with dogs do not take into consideration the Leave No Trace principle, "Be considerate of others." If your dog is not good around other hikers and dogs, it's probably a...
I know of at least one instance where a guide dog completed the entire trail with his blind thru-hiker owner. You can imagine how jealous the other dogs are. He's a god among dogs.
Twisted Sister had an unfortunate injury, a pretty nasty broken leg from what I heard, and had to get off. I hear she's going to finish in the spring when she heals up. I think Mr. Cowpie kept...
I know asking for help from the forum is not as good as going to an MD or PT, but I also knew that this is the BEST place to start. So many people frequently visit this site, and some are in the...
I've been doing some research and I think I may have developed a chronic knee conditioned called "chondromalacia patella." I found a website that recommends a pretty intense icing regimen before...
Thanks. Yeah, I couldn't run right now if I wanted to. I tried today and didn't get 30 yds. before having to stop. So I'm going to do some elliptical or exercise bike at the gym and weights and...
I should start by saying my knees did fine during the hike, but immediately after I got off the trail they started hurting. Now, after three weeks, I no longer have any muscle soreness, the bottoms...
Just thought I'd share!

I'm going to guess it's a different Stargazer because this one started in Maine this year; unless he decided to thru-hike again instead of start where he left off. He is in school in Florida though...
Yep that's her. Wow, good for her!
I didn't have a trail journal, but I did have a blog that I keep forgetting to include. Here it is: http://revthruhiker.blogspot.com. I was trying to do something a little different than a regular...
Yep I did meet both of them along the way--I think Sweet Tea was with a group of five but I can't remember all their names--Caveman, Yellow Bird, Juice, ... I think they finished a day or two before...
Awesome! Give her a congrats from me!
Yeah we didn't have nearly as many leftovers this year! :D
142 was my plan when I started and I was blessed with great weather. The drought made it challenging but there were enough people...
I just wanted to let anyone know who might have run into me in the past few months that I reached Springer on a warmer than avg. fall day, Nov. 19. It was beautiful, just a few puffy white clouds. ...
