Any legal options anyone wants to point out within 2 miles either south or north of big meadows that I should look out for a spot to hang off the trail? I don't care about having a water source close...
Great tip thanks! I will look out for it.
lol I kind of had a feeling this was the sort of response I would get. I have a hammock, so all I need is trees. I will just have to find my own campsite in that area off the trail somewhere.
Wish you could edit posts. I mean't to clarify that I would need a site with trees - as I am a hammock sleeper. So wondering what kind of luck I will have snagging a site on a holiday weekend as a...
What are my chances of finding an available site at Big Meadows this Saturday if I were to hike in around 4-6pm?
These are my 2 options.
The distance on the Appalachian Trail between
Rockfish Gap, VA and
VA55-Linden, VA
is 115.3 miles.
Average miles per day: 28.5
The distance on the Appalachian...
I am going to be hiking either completely through SNP or from 33/elkton to the north end. I have not decided which yet, its a difference of about 30-40 miles. I only have 4.5 days to hike, so just...
No ideas? I have searched every way I can think of on the internet and have not found anything. Boggles my mind that something can't be found on the internet :-?
Can anyone shed any insight on this?

Was on the AT just south of Sky Meadows boundary in VA.
Appreciate the input. I will look out for that blue blaze prior to the shelter - and if I don't make it that far or go further I will just have to make something work.
I am doing this stretch tomorrow/saturday. I hike alone and prefer to camp away from groups. My goal area to stop tomorrow night is the Rod Hollow Shelter. How far are the tent spots from this...
I work walking distance to an REI....which is dangerous. Even though I consider myself a UL backpacker, REI does have good value in things like clothing, food, and the occasional good deal. I have a...
Buddy and I had to put our week in Glacier on the backburner so I am thinking about doing SNP from Rockfish to 66/Linden (117 miles) in early september. I am going to give myself a saturday to...
I have read it 2x in a year. I think its an excellent read, and it always gets me excited about hiking and about the AT.
I ran. Was pouring down rain, very muddy, and a very technical single track trail. I started off strong and felt good, but had pain kick in around 3 miles. The pain built through the remainder of the...
Doc said Tendonitis due to overuse. It has actually improved a lot since yesterday. I have been icing it all week and taking it easy, and taking ibuprofen 2x daily.
Doc said I can run on it...
I have made an appointment for the this afternoon to have it looked at. Further reading and advice here does make it sound like the IT Band.
I was only carrying 18-20lbs for the hike, but the...
I backpacked almost 30 miles last weekend in WV and ended up with some pretty bad knee pain. The last 5 miles were very painful, and I was basically limping along.
The pain has gotten better the...
I have a 2010 Jam. I removed the built in back pad, but I use my Tyvek ground sheet as my support now. It goes in first, trash bag with everything else after that, and wet/needed items in the front...
The park system is part of what makes this country great. We as a country need to spend more time in our national parks not less. I hope and pray that this gets resolved without affecting the park...
Wow can you not edit posts? I meant to say Marshall Mountains, not Mill Mountain (which is in WV).
My favorite section of the AT through SNP that I have done so far is over Mill Mountain. Great views looking west. I have not hiked much in the southern portion of SNP, but everything from 211 north...
My GF has one of these, we picked up cheap for warmer months camping. It is an ok bag, but not great. I would not recommend it for temps under 40, and its over 2lbs and does not compress down that...
Ultras are a dream right now, but working my way up to it. Just started running again this past year.
I have two 5 milers in March, one in april, Warrior dash in may, and half marathon in June....
