The Ed Garvey Shelter was my first shelter on a flip-flop out of Harpers Ferry in 2015. Was a beautiful shelter. There was a stone structure in back of the shelter, which I later found out was a...
((Calorie intake per day - Calories burned per day) X Nunber of days hiking per week) / 3500 = Lbs gain or loss during the days hiked per week.
If you know, or can approximate, 3 of the 4...
Odd Man Out,
I figured that might have been the reason and glad you're here. There seems to be a fixation with the odd-ball diets, when a simple plan of variety works well if the quantity of food is...
Odd Man, couldn't have explained it better than that!
C2 for me. At 74, I'm running out of time and really do not want to delay. Only have another 1400 miles to go so it shouldn't be so bad. :-)
A while ago I got into a discussion about carbohydrates while on the trail. Somehow it became my trail name. Anyway, lots of carbs and a good amount of protein is good. Try for the veggies and...
I like carbohydrates and my name is Bob Carlson (hence Carbo). Also, if I continue hiking for a few more years it will help me remember my real name when I'm in my 80's :)
Pouring rain here all day. Gutter was clogged and driving me nuts, so I got out my rain gear, climbed the ladder and cleared it out. Highlight of the day!
A lot of falls, but nothing serious. I do know that its important to pay attention to the "three-trip rule". Three trips within several minutes = time to take a break.
Interesting. Just a random check of comments along the AT shows the latest date posted is May 2018 (for the ones checked). I just posted a comment for Springer Mtn and it does appear at the bottom...
Anyone know when the comments are updated in the Guthook app? Just browsing through the app and the latest comments seem to all be from 2018.
The drive from the lodge to the top of Springer (parking area off Fire Service RD 42) is about 30 miles and takes close to 45 minutes. This is the western route along RT 52 to the Roy Road turn-off....
Ditto RockDoc. The long hours of darkness are a problem. The boredom and lack of hiking generated body heat is a serious challenge.
I never gave much thought to my glasses until I saw this thread. Never had much of a problem except for a blowing, misty rain that can get on the lenses. It can be a pain to wipe them while hiking....
Just hiked the approach trail (12/2/19). My wife drove up the Fire Service Rd42 to meet me at the top, no problem. Also started at the arch behind the visitor's center, without a pack, made an...
1. Losing weight to maintain an ideal BMI.
2. Strength training such as Leg Press, Calf Raise and Leg Extensions.
3. Hiking the hills with a pack.
4. Carefully plan and test your "Dry Camp...

I find it's a battle between my mind and the raw determination of just doing it that gets me through most tough spots. Not only the heights, but to just keep slogging along. It certainly can be a...
I don't have a fear of heights, just a fear of falling.
Climbing out of Lehigh Gap nobo is the one that scared me. Made the mistake of looking back. It took about 5 minutes to just calm down and breathe normally. You can always take the winter trail...
Had the same Leki grip problem. Slide the grip down and glue the pole, slide the grip back up before it sets. I also wraped a few layers of gorilla tape around the pole against the base of the grip....
In addition to the preventive measures listed above, you may want to have a Lyme test done, one before the season starts to get a reference level, then a second one near the end of season to see if...
At his age I was thinking a Triple Crown hiker was one who finished the AT in three years. This will be my 5th year at attempting to complete the AT, maybe I can be a Quintuple Crown hiker? Anyway,...
Will likely start last week of April. Prior years I've been flipping from Harper's Ferry and north, and there got to be quite a few hikers doing the same. I like company but also a little solitude is...
