Read the book first ... then saw the movie ... enjoyed both because they were just someone's story. I like to hear people's stories because there are usually a thought or two from which I can learn.
Generally, if my feet are warm and my head is warm, I'm pretty much warm ... I usually put on a 2nd pair of socks and wear a capilene with a hoody and I'm good ... at least until I remember to put my...

I was there a year ago (June 2013) and didn't see/hear any critters except pigs. The cable system was working well and neither mice, squirrels, bears, nor pigs got to my food. There was water in...

What SH said above about getting a pack that fits. That's one of the most important things you can do. I have a Big Agnes Fly Creek UL2. It's really a 1.5 person tent, but my wife and I slept in it a...

Big Agnes FlyCreek UL2 fits two 20-inch pads and slept comfortably on the Timberline Trail in Oregon. It ain't roomy, but it's only 20-or-so ozs.
Maybe it was taking my son on his first campout when he was 18 mos old and hearing him sleep in our small canvas pup tent ... or maybe it was hiking the Boulevard Trail to LeConte when I was 12...
I always suggest hiking to your car. Park at NOC and get a shuttle to Fontana and hike back to your car ... less time pressure that way ... and, of course, less smell for the shuttlers vehicle.

I have a Tarptent Rainbow which is lightweight, although a single-wall tent, so sometimes the moisture buildup inside is significant in the southeast mountains. I also use a Big Agnes UL2, which is...
I've hiked in the Sipsey over 50 times in over 15 years, and I've always found the trails easy to follow. The PDF copy of the map is the most accurate, I think. You didn't say whether you started...
