I'm also 6'4" and settled on the Double Rainbow after talking with the folks at Tarptent...just a little more weight. Plenty of room for all my gear plus good head room to sit up in the tent....
This tread brings back memories...back in the 60's I was doing mission work in Chile with the Mapuche Indians. We were told not to drink a drink offered with a silver straw...yerba mate....needless...
Don't have to register...outside the park. As stated...several hundred yards from the visitor center. Great shelter...but no...no Subway or Jimmy Johns nearby....only the lake.
Rain Man....thanks for the post and pics...I had previously read 10K's trip report...belated thanks 10K....both of you convinced me to change plans and walk the Pinhoti next month or early May. I...
I have used my sawyer on two AT trips thus far with no issues. I carry the small and medium bag..has worked for me. I carry an empty 12 or 16 oz water plastic bottle that I use to get water from...
First....thank you for your service to our Nation. It's about a mile from the parking lot at FS 42 back up to top of Springer Mtn. Take it slow...nice section..coupe of days to Woody Gap..couple more...
I'm 6'4" and 265lbs...been slowly trying to get the weight on my back lighter...currently have the ULA catalyst...Tarptent Double Rainbow...and JRB top quilt. I found for me that a bag was too...
Something to try that has worked every time for me is to use dish soap and a cotton ball.....put the dish soap on the cotton ball and place on tick on your body......let stay for about 20 seconds or...
No problems leaving car down by the dam...I parked mine across from the showers at the dam and left it there for over a week...no issues. Also call Jeff and Nancy at the Hike Inn in...
ahhhh...what the heck.....GO NAVY....BEAT Army!
If my memory serves me....maybe one site about half way up the climb...but no water...there is a good campsite along the trail just north of the blue blaze to Sasafrass shelter....
Check out Fontana Village....southern end of the Smokies...lots of things to keep family entertained.
Check out the Double Rainbow from HS Tarptent....around 3lbs...easy to set up and take down...handles all weather conditions very well.
As stated...Bulls can be very unpredictable...some calm....and some nasty. I've worked with both...I finally got rid of my black angus bull after getting knocked down more times than I can...
You can resupply at Standing Bear hostel....Curtis will take good care of you....enough food to get you to HS's...about 3 miles north of the Park.
You might consider using a Speer Segmented Pad Extender (SPE)...not very expensive and solves the pad issue at your shoulder. Cheers.
Hot Springs to Erwin in April.....Erwin to 19E in Sept.
I was in a similar position...trying to choose between two very good tents....I called and talked with the folks at Tarptent...was not Henry...but told them my size, how I sleep, what my desires for...
I have the HHED and have been happy with using the Speer SPE with a cheap Wally World blue pad...actually two pads when temps get into the 20's. I think the SPE weighs about 6 ozs....don't hold me to...
Jeff and Nancy will take good care of you. Great shuttle service. Staying with them June 1st as we head into the Smokies.
There is a campsite a couple miles or so past Cable Gap shelter but it is almost always wet...not the best unless you hammock. Once you pass the marina at Fontana you will find one good "stealth"...
piped spring at Winding Stair....south side of road.
