Looking for a LIGHT but good camera that takes great pictures. Anybody have a camera they are really happy with that fits the bill and they would recommend? I have a fairly small camera now, but want...
Besides, I can't for the life of me imagine why any hiker would be in the Hampton area and even consider not staying at Kincora. Do yourself a favor and go meet Bob and stay at Kincora.
Hatman and I stayed there on our first thru hike. We did NOT stay there on the second hike and would not stay there again. That's all I'm going to say.
We do the same on all long distance hikes. Doesn't weigh much and certainly cannot hurt.
Lake Superior is so beautiful. I LOVE it up there. Of course Isle Royal is on 'the list' too.
Thanks Deucalion. I wondered about the illumination. Sounds like it is not an issue.
Has anybody tried the Mammut S-Lite Headlamp? It uses 1-AA battery and has 3 LED bulbs. It weighs in at 48 g. with batteries (1.693 oz.) and only 20 bucks. Just wondering if anyone has any experience...
My husband and I have done several thru hikes and we most certainly share our gear and save weight.
tent/groundcloth/stakes
water filter/aqua mira
cooking pot/pop can stove/lighter/fuel
food (I...
Mine has sprung 3 leaks which I located easily in the tub. Now for those who have successfully repaired their leaks, did you use the 'official' Thermarest repair kit, or did you use another method?...
I agree with some of the others. We each had the capacity to carry 2-3 liters, depending upon the stretch of trail, but usually only carried one full of water -- two if it was a dry section (like...
Within the first year of our marriage Hatman and I realized that we both wanted to hike the trail. It sounded so exciting, daring, and romantic! Well, come Spring we hit the trail. I can see how some...
Well, I went to the Smartwool Sock outlet today at lunch. If memory serves, when I was there in December they had a 3 pair limit per month and the price was $5 each (used to be 6 pair limit at $3...
I was thinking about heading over to the outlet today at lunch, but didn't make it. I'll go tomorrow instead. I was there in December and they had just started selling Smartwool again. They mostly...

Don't forget the GEEZER HIKE, a not-for-profit, van-supported trek of the Appalachian Trail starting April 1, 2010. Intended for...
I second that!
Yes! They apparently do have an ebay presence. The Minus 33 woollies are on sale right now...not sure how long the sale will last.
My order just came in today's mail. I LOVE them! They are so...
Just ordered a Minus 33 Merino Wool top and bottom that they have listed on ebay. Both are on sale for a pretty darn good price. Laura was very nice to deal with.
My vote has to go to Kincora. We were in Bob and Pat's first class and when we strolled in 4 years later on our next thru he remembered us and our year. He pointed to our picture on his wall. What...
Hatman and I had hiked the Georgia section several times, then the middle (TN/NC) section once, then a complete southbound thru hike in the fall of 2005, shortly after the grand opening. The only...
I agree with Hikerhead. We sent our cold weather gear home from Pearisburg both trips. We left the church hostel into blowing snow, but when we got out of town, it was fine!
The only thing we carried was some ibuprofen and vitamins, and hardly ever used the Vitamin I. Every year someone gets Giardia or Lyme Disease and must see the Doctor.
If it was me, I'd just do...
In '97 we left the first of April and had tons of cold Spring rain.
In '01 we left Feb. 22 and of course it was cold, and we had a blizzard the first day of Spring in upper East TN, but our...
Hatman and I started our 01 AT thru with our whisperlite. We switched to an alcohol stove in Pearisburg and have used it ever since. I will NEVER go back!
Hatman and I use a 2L pot with an alcohol stove. We used this system on our '01 thru and still use it today. We both eat right out of the pot and we do not carry an extra vessel to ration out the...
