Yep, its as dry as I've ever seen it.
Thanks, TN! That's kind of what it looked like to me from the little bit I saw.
Also, are those FS roads as rough as they look?

Thank you, Tipi, for the beta! I'll read your reply about 100 times while looking at my map! :)
I posted another post awhile back, but I wanted to change my approach a little. I actually went to Thunder Rock last weekend and checked out the Forest Service road that goes up the mountain. I don't...
Thanks, Muddy! Can't wait to hit the trail with my oldest boy.

LOL! Thank you so much for the update, PatmanTN! I am getting our packs situated and my pack is just too heavy with all that water in it. A couple of Sawyer filters are much lighter, especially when...
Just checking in again to see if anyone has a water update at Tri Corner Knob shelter. We are spending Thursday night there.

Yes, I remember there being a spring very near the spot on the AT where I turned due east and bushwhacked up to the benchmark on Guyot's summit.
That would be an awful lot of water to have to hump up there. I did Guyot from Cosby Campground in one day last fall, and it was dry. I had to pack a lot of water for a day hike, albeit a 16 mile...
Thanks for all of the information! I really appreciate all of the responses! How's the water situation there? I hear sometimes there's not much.
I'm planning on a hike with my 10 year old son in a week or two up from Cosby with one night stay at TCK shelter, then back down. I know there's some bear activity in that area. Is there protection...
Thank you for the information! Sounds like we need to keep our packs in the shelter with us when we sleep!
My son and I are planning to spend the night at Tricorner knob shelter this summer. Of course, we will have to hang our food. Is a bear proof bag required? Thanks,
Jon
Thanks for the info, Ashe! That sounds promising!

I just found Tim Homan's book at McKay's.
Thanks for all of the info! So, is the most expedient route up Big Frog Mountain going up the road, then going up Big Frog trail? The BMT seems a more roundabout way up.
I just looked on the map, and I think the BMT intersects the route from Thunder Rock higher up on Peavine Ridge.
Thanks for the info, Ashe! Is the trail from Thunder Rock the Benton McKaye?
Thanks Tn! Big Frog in one day from Thunder Rock should be epic! I'm really looking forward to it.

I'm considering doing Big Frog this summer from Thunder Rock Campground. It looks similar to Mt. Guyot from Cosby that I did last fall, but with less elevation gain. I'm thinking of doing it this way...
