the doyle. and it's not even close.
awesome, love that!
amen, i promise you'll have the time of your life! enjoy the planning, and more importantly, enjoy your journey!
carried a whisperlite for a while, it was good for it's purpose (boiling water). I also found that i could deep fry pancakes in the morning (much oil needed so as not to torch the pancake) it ended...
clif bars! quick, easy, nutritious and they have a hell of a lot more flavors these days compared to when i last thru'ed. i think i ate clif bars for breakfast for most of my breakfasts on each...
yes, it's a great spot. all of the above is pretty accurate. their prices are more than fair considering they are in the middle of f'ing nowhere. (treat yourself to the burger, it's amazing)
i know a dude who thru hiked in '01 while working along the way w/ a laptop. it's def doable, if you don't mind the affect it would have on your hike (which would be too much for most).
i would message skyline, who's a member here. he's helped run a successful shuttle service over in luray for years. i've used his service before with friends and was very impressed.
for what it's worth: if hikers did decide to "boycott" the town of front royal, it would not be noticed. it's not monson, FR is a pretty big town and it doesn't need the trail, or hikers for it's...
haha, that town's a friggin dump anyways. they would be better served to address the riff-raff that lives there on a permanent basis.
not really, aside from places in towns that don't allow dogs. that was probably the biggest inconvenience. that, and i was carrying 15 lbs of dog food out of every town.
hardly a fair characterization of someone hiking with a dog. sounds like you're making a bad generalization. i stopped by and stayed at upper goose with my dog in '03, but i started sobo; don't...
i tried the granite gear booties for my lab & he just wouldn't wear them. he ended up hiking bare-hoofed, and we never had a problem, even in the steep rocky stuff in nh & me. his pads got thicker...
pretty sure they open at 11am.
couldn't agree more!
amen brother! on more than one occasion, i've had the pleasure of sharing a shelter with a non-thru hiker homeless person. much more interesting conversation than most typical hikers, and not once...
lol, i couldn't agree more. did abol trail as a first-timer & it kicked my ass, i went up the hunt trail the next time i hiked & questioned why i had thought abol was such a good idea the first...
great advice, tipi, especially the one a/b getting him used to the pack. in preparation for my hike, i whittled down the weight in my dog's pack until he hiked with me just like he did when he...
glad to see you're well wookie, that piece on you & the farm was pretty amazing!
so, so true.
your first suggestion is a good one, and yes, it helps you hike further.
could be, but i would answer that by saying that if that's the case, then my knees were about a month behind the rest of my body.
i'll never go for another long-distance w/o poles. and i used to...
have fun johnnyt, sounds like a blast!
while i wouldn't consider it a scientific study, i started my first thru in maine at age 22 w/o using poles: by the time i reached monson both knees were in pain and i had to buy braces for each. ...
